Akai s950 troubles...

Hey guys. I been messing around trying to figure out how to sample, how to navigate, how to basically use this s950 for a couple days now. I have my MIDI OUT from my SP12, to, MIDI IN on the s950. Now when I turn them both on connected, I click a pad on my SP12, and it makes a little tone. A Short little noise? Its on every pad I click and I do not know how to make it go away. BUT that is not the main problem I'm having...

I sample my sounds into the s950, I edit the sound how I want on the s950, but when I go to click my SP12 pad to trigger the s950, nothing happens except for that annoying little noise thats on every pad.

1. How do I connect my sampled sound from my s950 to the SP12 pad I desire?

2. How do I get rid of that annoying little beep on every SP12 pad. Its comming from the s950, because I will change settings on the 950 and the sound will change with it.

the SP12/SP1200 pads doesn't act like a MPC pad (or a key on a keyboard) as far as I know.
It only send a short trigger to the 950 not like a keyboard which sends a NOTE ON message and holds it as long as you hold down the key.
There are two way to get it work

1. Go to Page 15 of EDIT PRGRM and set the One-Shot mode to ON.

or

2. Go to PAGE 10 and set the Release Parameter to 99 or lower if you want the sample to fade out

In both cases the sample will just play all the way thru and you can only stop it by playing another sample (chop) that use the same output 1-8 (PAGE 17). If you want it to stop to silence (not another chop) you could use an empty sample (sample some ms of silence and set the keygroup of it to the same output as the sample you want to stop)

I some what figured this out, but now I want to get my sample I chopped in my s950 to play in MONO on my SP-12.

The same sample I chopped up on my s950 plays on all 8 of my SP-12 pads at different pitches? Why, and how do I make it so only (Pad 1) plays my sample I chopped?

When you record the sample you need to press the SP number 1 button when it prompts you to select the original key of the sample. (flip through the pages).
Then add the sample you made to a keygroup and set the keyspan to one note (the one which corresponds to button 1 on the SP). You do this by setting the lower limit and then the upper limit of the keyspan, so they both show the same note (same as button number 1).
If you don't know which note it is you can do it easily by trial and error by pressing the button repeatedly as you adjust. If it stops making a sound you have gone too far. Your sample should now play at the proper pitch on the right button.
For the next sample/button, repeat the above but use button two (or whatever) as the original key. Then make a new KG for it and adjust it's keyspan so it just plays the new note.
And so on...

I hope this helps. It should at least point you in the right direction. (I am a little rusty with the s950).
I would recommend making a coffee and getting re-aquainted with the manual if you get lost.

I need to download a s950 manual and take a read. But thanks homie! Right after work Im going to play with this some more. Im lost on the keygroup thing, but Some playing around having frustrated fun with it will work.

The keygroup thing is really simple. It's really all in that vid. That's how I learned it. Also, making a boot disk for the s950 that has all your keygroups and settings laid out is IMPERATIVE. Also, make sure to change Midi Omni to "No".

I just sold my sp1200 but if you go to dxa the sp1200 forum theres a sp12/1200 midi chart that tells you the note numbers of every pad on the sp, i fount that very useful.
When you know the note number just make a s950 keygroup that has both and high and low set to that same note number.
For example D1 on the sp is 36, d2 is 38, d3 is 40, d4 is 41, d5 is 43, d6 is 45, d7 is 39 and d8 is 37 if i remember correctly (doing this out of memory).
Do 8 keygroups out of those notes and set em all to constant pitch and one shot and youre good to go!

Hey MaZe.. I actually just made a thread asking on how to actually create and make the Key Group Disk. I'm not sure if you could drop any knowledge on how that works.

If i had more money i wouldve kept it but i felt like a mpc was more flexible. I like playing basslines so i was craving that note off, plus the music i feel like making doesnt benefit from the sp that much. So i sold my sp/s950 combo and bought a mpc3k which im lovin. I already have a emax so if i ever wanna gritty up the loop i can just use that
Tho if i was made out of money i wouldve kept it, some loops just sound so damn nice its unbeatable!
