cymbal crash & ride

Hi there

I was wondering if anyone know any good sources for (downloading) cymbals.
I've got jazz records and a few multisample packs, but they all seem to sound a bit like cheese, as in thin.
I also have a ride, but my recording techniques and equipment are not that great.

My honest suggestion for rides, rolls, and crashes are to actually record them yourself. I know that it takes some money to invest in just a simple setup like this, but I find it much harder to look for something that you want in this category than to just play it yourself and sample it into your machine. The tone from a ride is crucial to fit into a song, and this is where the right stick, where you actually hit the cymbal, and mic placement come into play. Other than that.....just dig for breaks man. Jazz and prog rock will be your friends in this category.

i have two kits downstairs but still have yet to sample any live drums. In fact i just made a beat yesterday using a crash out of on of the akai sound discs, might have been the standard kit. anyway talk about cheesy sounding. but shit with everything else goin on it sounds kinda ill.

I just meant that you can get on craigslist and get a nice cheap zildjian A series ride for under $100, doesn't have to be a full kit. Just single hits, rolls, crashes. Same goes for percussion sounds like shakers, tambourines, etc.....it can get really fun to add some live elements to your tracks!

You need 2 pro drummers with full drum setups to record crash and ride samples?

i've got a ride, a hihat, 2 mics (sm58 and akg perception 100) and an apogee recording device
Any tips on getting the recordings more vintage sounding? like they did sound during the 60's and early 70's. I guess during that era, drums were more saturated, no?

the best way to get that sound is to use gear form that era. Ive got a vintage ribbon mic with steel casing and an old mixer with a tube in it.

You try any soul records? That's where I usually find those.

i use cymbals from battery 3 a lot. the are recorded very well, i think you can get it for like 79 or 100 dollars now too.

if you have the money to invest in it, id say do it. its also a very good software instrument in its on right.

i think they did away with all the nice acoustic samples in battery 4 and they just have some more synthetic ones.

I ripped some cymbal manufacture websites a few years ago. They got audio demos for most of their stuff. Back when I dled it the files were 128kbps mp3 but now (I just checked the zildjian website) at least they have a few 320kbps mp3s.

If you want all the demos you'll have to do a little research in how to rip them all automatically.

one of my mates used to go into music shops with his handheld HD recorder and record percussion, usually everything they had in the shop haha.

Walks out with a full SD card of real percs and drum hits haha

^^^ ive thought of getting one of those little portable recorders and doing that.
