Recording problem 2000xl

Hey guys im new here. i just got an mpc 2000xl, the special edition 1 today. Everything works beautifully on it, except for the record in. I went to sample some new stuff and when it goes into the mpc the sound quality of the sample is very noticeably lowered. theres no bass, and it sounds like its bit crushed. am I doing something wrong or do I have to replace a part?

We need some more details. What are you using as a sample source (turntables, mixer, computer, etc.)?
What type of cables are you using?

I used an audio cable with the converter on the end so it will plug into the mpc. And I was using songs on my phone just to test it out

Is it possible the headphone jack is messed up and not the recording jack?

It could be the cable you're using. You need an 1/8" stereo to dual 1/4" cable.

Do I absolutely need one of those cords or can I use a converter like this
