Studio recording magazine for FREE

The magazine "Tape Op" is offering FREE subscriptions on their website.

The magazine is oriented around music recording and studio techinques. It's cool because they focus more on home/mid-level studio stuff and being creative on a lower budget. You won't find reviews of the latest $1500-a-day studio. Interviews, gear reviews, etc. Great mag.
I've been subscribing for a year or so, and there's no catch. It's free.

Yeah, it's a great mag.....

I think it's a lot more useful than Scratch and all the other "hip hop" magazines, because it's focused on recording tips, as opposed to "Kanye uses ASR-10" type of information....

I tried to find the "catch". i.e. nothing in life is free. I couldn't find one other than having to give a little info about myself.

I'm sure the reason there's no "catch" is - the more copies that they can guarantee will get into people's hands, the more their advertising space is worth.
Their money comes more from their advertisers than copies sold.

But, check the news-stand. This mag is $3.95 off the shelf.

you beat me to it, i was just bout to post about tape op... i was just enjoying my first issue, great mag for the newstand price, let alone free... i just received my free issue last week, took about a month and a half or so after signing up... dope mag, interesting stuff...

yeah i been gettin it for a while too. they got some good hip hop recording articles usally. The reason they give away free ones is cause they are damaged. they say on the website that u will recieve torn ones or the covers will be jacked. I guess there sendbacks from the place that they dont sell out of. But the magazine is ill.

yea they sure did say that. i could care less how the covers torn lol. as long as i dont get halfway thru an interesting article and find out its cut off

That's weird, because I just looked at 4 copies I've recieved in the last year, and none of them have been torn or damaged.....and I can't recall ever receiving a damaged copy.

...and I think the free copies are only for the US.

I've been sub'ed to TapeOp for a couple of years, and if your copies are arriving torn, complain to your post office. As said above, they give away copies to increase their readership, which makes them for valueable to advertisers.

There is a new (as in, as of about 6 months ago) policy in which they may occasionaly rent their mailing list to recording-related companies. If they have, it doesn't bother me to get an extra flyer from Musicians Friend or Sweetwater on rare occasion.

TapeOp really is one of those rare things in life that's just good. It's one of the most honest magazines I've ever read, and it wipes the floor of EQ, Recording, Electronic Musician, Sound On Sound (although SOS is damned good; just really expensive stateside), and Keyboard. I don't read hip-hop magazines, so I don't know how it compares there.
