hey folks,

i am slowly getting into the mpc1000 i bought recently and have a couple of qlink related questions. had no luck with the search so far.

- am i understanding this correctly and qlink is the only way to automate on the mpc and only two params per program? or can i parameters in multiple recording passes?

- the after button is a bit confusing. i keep pressing it until it sounds like the last thing i´ve recorded. what is the idea behind it?

- can i access the midi cc params of the sampler or do i need to assign the qlink to a param and automate the link itself as an intermediary.

- when i navigate through some pages the qlink gets apparently disabled. is this regular behaviour?

i know these are very basic questions but i would be very grateful for any help.

thanks and have a good weekend yall

Have you read the manual?

There is a section on the Q-Link sliders, that explains the After function (page 44-45), and probably answers some of your other questions as well.

i went through the jjos manual but should really dig into the official one aswell.
just thought i might get a more direct answer from a human in regards to automation and midi cc.

i will take your advice and thanks for the reply.

All good, you will probably get some better human explainations of the other points, but there is a detailed explaination of the Q-Link sliders and After function, and how they work exactly in different modes, in the MPC1000 manual.

The Q-Link sliders record events into the sequencer. You can record the events from the two Q-Links into the sequencer, then change the Q-Link settings, and record events for different pads into the sequencer in multiple passes.

thanks simon,

that is exactly what i was trying to find out.
i will look out for the general concept in the manual but its good to know that i am not limited by two sliders/parameters.

cheers man.

Give the manual a read, and get back with any questions or clarification you need.

Don't let me suggesting that you read the manual put you off from asking any questions here.

having it open as i write this - it´s a bit confusing going back and forth between the akai and jj manuals, and trying to figure out the overlaps. i will surely have questions as i go.

again thanks, always appreciate your contributions on this forum and the others.

ah ok, so q-links diifer pretty much between various OS'

- am i understanding this correctly and qlink is the only way to automate on the mpc and only two params per program? or can i parameters in multiple recording passes?

On os2xl, only 2 per the same tick, one event "note on", second "realtime", you can have multiple things, but not on the same position, there is also mixer and few other things automated by CC. OS1 and OS2 differ and you can have multiple events on the same tick, many of them.. but when too much mpc starts to lag
- the after button is a bit confusing. i keep pressing it until it sounds like the last thing i´ve recorded. what is the idea behind it?

on os2xl, it also differs from older OS' (akai,os1,os2) in a way that when light is on it re-records previous events, no light on -no effect anyway (recording or playing), also.. there is no q-link overdubbing like on older OS'
- can i access the midi cc params of the sampler or do i need to assign the qlink to a param and automate the link itself as an intermediary.

there's not much but all can be done from MIDI controller or q-links, no need to assign q-link first (CC in does not cover q-link options)
- when i navigate through some pages the qlink gets apparently disabled. is this regular behaviour?

yes, only Main and q-link page on os2xl, on older OS' it was accessible from many screens

thanks man you really cleared this up for me and explained some of the erratic behaviour i was experiencing with the qlinks.

i do have some follow ups if you have the patience:

On os2xl, only 2 per the same tick, one event "note on", second "realtime", you can have multiple things, but not on the same position. OS1 and OS2 differ and you can have multiple events on the same tick, many of them.. but when too much mpc starts to lag

so basically having both realtime would max the capabilities out since the data is recorded constantly. having them note on would leave a bit more room for extra parameters correct?

on os2xl, it also differs from older OS' (akai,os1,os2) in a way that when light is on it re-records previous events, no light on -no effect anyway (recording or playing), also.. there is no q-link overdubbing like on older OS'

that explains alot. so basically each pass is recorded over the last one as a whole.
i figured i was overdubbing but it was always a mess.

there's not much but all can be done from MIDI controller or q-links, no need to assign q-link first (CC in does not cover q-link options)

if read this correctly only the filter cutoff/resonance are available. no tuning or sample start and such?
i figured from the jj charts that if qlink can accept midi i can work around this, but apparently it only sends it out.

the way i have it setup at the moment is that i am using an external sequencer. i hoped there is some way of controlling the parameters but midi cc was always skimpy on all of the akai samplers.

thanks alot for your insights.

now in this OS you can't record both q-links realtime, nr2 has priority if you will set both of them, also you can't have both "note on" because only one can be written at tick. Well yeah note on is only per note, so it's not heavy.

Sample start/end only from q-links.. and this is all you can get as CC input

#01 => Modulation wheel
#02 or 74 => Filter Cutoff
#07 => Volume
#10 => Pan
#71 => Filter resonance
#91 => FX send
Pitchbend
Program Change

as far as controlling other gear it receives/records/sends all CCs and other stuff.
