Ren Stopped Outputting Computer Audio

Fired up the computer and Ren this morning to get busy and to my surprise, no internet audio or computer sounds using Ren's interface. I still get audio out of Logic PX, PT, Live 9 etc... but no YouTube or computer audio. Recently upgraded from Lion to 10.8.3 too tho. Could that be the issue? Any special drivers or updates I'm missing? Can't upgrade to Mavs yet because of school software incompatibility issues. Any advice?

This is a common issue with the latest REN software. Logic uses the REN audio interface. But you can't use the the REN's interface for in- and output for other sources playing sound on you mac such as youtube, itunes etc.

I thought that this was only a Mavericks problem now. Mountain Lion still has this issue too (I've got 10.8.5)? I remember reading a thread that there was a patch of some sort released by Akai to fix this issue for Mountain Lion. I've exhausted the search function and can't find it. If anyone remembers, can you post a link to the patch or the thread?

I have up to date Mountain Lion, Ren in USB 2.0 port, and zero issues.

It is a known issue in 3.0 that audio interfaces have issues (Ren is an audio interface). Apple of course fixed it it an up date to Mountain Lion (and Mav is of course fixed), Microsoft does not see it as an issue...... So I use ASIO4ALL drivers and use my Studio on the Surface Pro 2......

However, I'm not experiencing any crashes. Only issue is no computer audio. I've checked the Ren using both a USB 2.0 hub as well as plugging directly into my MBP. Any help is appreciated. My system specs are:

2.6 GHz, Quad Core MBP (Mid 2012)
16 GB Ram
OSX 10.8.5
Ren V1.6

I thought that was a problem specific to the Renaissance drivers with Mavericks?


Have you tried reinstalling the audio drivers for whatever version of MPC Software you are running?

i had the same problem after upgrading from SL 10.6.8 to ML 10.8.5... no sound from youtube, soundcloud & whole internet.
still audio from iTunes and DAW`s

i don`t know what it does and how it works... but for me it solved the problem.

i followed the instructions... booted from usb stick and reinstalled 10.8.... tested it under 10.8 (worked) and updated to 10.8.5. (worked)

here is the text (copy & paste)

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "I/O error" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).

The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.

A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error

the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.

If the window is empty, continue.

Back up all data.

Boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

Yeah Simon, that's what I thought too. Guess we were wrong. I'll try reinstalling audio drivers when I get home. They're imbedded/ an option in the 1.6 OS right?

Thanks for the help and useful info PeteRepeat. Your English is just fine by the way. However, instead of messing around with terminal and reinstalling my OS, I think I'll just contact my instructor and see if it's OK to upgrade to Mavericks. Since the 10.9 audio driver Beta seems to be working fine for everyone and Mavs is a free upgrade, this seems the easiest and least risky option, at least for me. I could still have sworn tho, that 10.8 fixed this issue.
