Sequencer doesn't record in real time (2000 XL)

Hi,

I recently got a MPC 2000 XL used and it works great as far as sampling goes, and I think I have a basic understanding of it by now.

In the main screen though, and I have sounds on pads, when I hold Rec and play the pad with the tempo I desire (usually for 2 bars) and hit Play to hear it again, either it plays what i recorded at twice the speed or it plays the 2nd pad i hit in unison with the first, then theres nothing, then it plays the same thing again.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question and that using Rec on the main screen isn't even the way you record pads, but I was wondering how to make it so I can hit rec, and play 2 bars and have it loop perfectly without playing back too fast or on top of each other. Same goes for Overdub which has the same problems.

You don't 'hold Rec and play the pad', you press Rec-PlayStart or Rec-Play to start the recording of a new/blank sequence, or pres Overdub-Play or Overdub-PlayStart to add to a sequence you have already recorded.

The notes playing on top of each other sounds like Timing Correct is turned on, which is quantising the notes to the grid based on the Timing setting. Try turning Timing to off, see if it works the way you expect, then learn what the different Timing Correct settings are doing.

Thank you a ton. I thought maybe the Akai was busted or something. I figured it out now after doing Rec/Play.

If you hold the rec button down and press the pads it will write the pad events in step edit and advance the sequence, according to the timing correct, every time you press a pad.
Try holding rec, press pads and observe the timing field.
I've never known anyone actually use this method to program but you never know.
It's kinda useful to set down your HiHat I guess.

I guess you worked out now that in many ways the sequencer works very much like an old fashioned tape recorder.

if the overdub is on when your doing that you can punch in events too, and it will drop your note and move you to the next event space depending on your TC
