PROG EDIT > F1 (MASTER)

Set to POLY if you want pads to overlap, this is the default setting unless you've generated the program from CHOP mode, in which case it will be set to MONO and all pads set to mute group 1.

If that's the case, set all pads to mute group OFF as well.

In the software, prog edit, under EDIT ZONES select ALL. Press F5 and set MUTE GROUP to OFF. Now set EDIT ZONES back to CURRENT.

I cover this in a lot of detail in my book:

Hi !

First, i'd like to thank everybody in this dope site !

I'm new to the MPC Studio, and I have a similar question.

I wanted my samples not to overlap each other, so I set to mono as explained in this topic.

But here's the situation : i've played my drum samples on my sequence (hats, kicks and snare), and since the program is set to mono, the samples mute each other, which i don't want !

So how can I get my drum samples not to mute each other, and my drum samples not to mute the others samples I'd like to add to the drums ?

(Sorry if I don't make myself clear, english is not my language...)

THANK YOU !

you can individually set each pad to mono. it says pad-play with another option of mono/poly when you are in program edit towards the bottom right of the screen.

so you want to set the master setting on your program to poly (so that you can play drum sounds at the same time) but individual pad-play options to mono (so that they cut themselves off without overlapping for stutters etc.)

There are two ways to set up individual mutes.

You can assign up to 4 mute targets per pad, meaning one pad will mute up to 4 other pads that are currently playing. This is the best option in my opinion because it lets you set up more complicated mute settings. eg. you can set your closed hihat sample to mute both the open and half-open hihat samples. you can hit the open and half-open pads as much as you like and the samples will overlap with each other, but hitting the closed hihat pad will mute both of them - this is probably the closest you can get to real life hi-hat sounds from a sampler

If you wanted more than 4 pads to be muted by one pad, you could use simultaneous play set up to hit another pad with another 4 mute targets... etc. etc.

The other way you can set up mutes is using the mute group option. any pads that share the same mute group will mute each other eg. you set all of your cymbal samples to group 1, so that they can only play one at a time with no overlap. This is a less controllable method for setting up mutes as they will all cancel each other out. this method is good for when working with sample chops.

all of these settings are available in program edit mode.
