NEW M.O. Drive

hi there, i'm thinking of doing this for my 2000 XL, i've been looking into hot swappable card stuff but it seems hard to get hold of the kit and maybe not as reliable. one thing i would like to do is use my mac to put samples i've made onto the drive to open on the mpc, is there a way to do this with these drives? i use a laptop so wondering if i can find some sort of cheap scsi to usb card to mount in a box

looked at your seller and no drives left, any other cheap drive links? peace

I own a Mac too. But I don't believe there's any SCSI to USB adaptors that work. Hopefully I'm wrong about that. I was gonna buy a 2nd MO drive for my PC. But I can't find the seller who had them at the price I paid.

Anyway, the MO disk is good for 10,000,000 rewrites. So it's very reliable. I chose the 230mb drive, so that I can use 230mb and 128mb disks, which are good sizes to partition in the 2K. This is a good workaround for the lack of folders in the file system.

Since the 2KXL has folders and the internal IDE connectors, it would make more sense for you to fit it with an internal CF drive. It's less of a hassle for swapping samples to and from a Mac. Add a USB CF drive and you're set.

I just had a quick look on ebay. The SCSI to USB adaptors are expensive as hell. I wouldn't try these on OS X unless you know it's a sure thing and you got money to burn.

I'll go the CF internal card reader way! it seems hard to find the hot swap ones at the mo but i'm gonna keep digging, see if i can find one in the UK that works well for me. peace dewd

I finally caught a deal on an external SCSI enclosure. I got outbid today on one of them, and luckily found an external SCSI CD rom (sold for parts). So I'll yank the CD rom and install the MO drive with a 3.5" to 5.25" adaptor.

Mission accomplished!

I have the MO drive installed in the new enclosure. No issues, no modifications. This enclosure is built like a tank. It almost weighs as much as the MPC1000. The entire enclosure is all made of steel, expect for the face plate. The whole project was entirely worth it. I'll post some new pics when I get a chance.

Here's a few pics. Nothing special. But it's a perfect color match with the 2K. Even the SCSI cable matches. The drive bay adaptor isn't a perfect match. But it's close enough. I'm really happy with it. I saved a lot of money. Total cost was around $70-$75 for all the parts (not counting the money I wasted on the EZ Drive enclosure that I bought originally).

I should be able to connect my Zip drive, chained to the MO drive. But it's just gonna be a ****. So I'm probably gonna sell the Zip drive with some brand new Zip discs for like $20 + shipping, if anyone's interested.

Thanks man. That was all luck. All these enclosures on ebay cost an arm and a leg. So I was searching for a while, got outbid on a few enclosures and searched for CD rom drives. At the end of the list, I found that drive. Nobody noticed it, cause everyones just hunting for enclosures. I probably should've played the lotto that day.

Nice! I'm a bit envy about the jogwheel of your 2000. It looks very clean. The one on my 2000 is a bit yellowish. Seems like it was used in a heavy cigarette smoke area. That smoke is the death to bright colored plastic. It really get INTO the material.

My jog wheel is slightly discolored. I cleaned mine up with rubbing alcohol and paper towels.

I did a bit of research after looking at the installation guide. The default jumper setting for the spindle automatic stop mode is set. I found another guide online for the Fujitsu M2512, and I checked the jumper. Since it takes a long time, it is what it is, and I'll continue to eject the disk. But I'm glad that I looked into it anyway.
