Didnt find the results I was looking for via SEARCH so Im here

Does anybody know if "AUDIO TRACKS" in the JJOS have been addressed yet so that you can hear the beat while you record in? Or is the Akai "DIRECT RECORD" feature on the 2500/5000 models still superior? Im finding myself a bit slowed down as of late in my workflow now that I want to record multiple instrument tracks being that my instrument (MicroKorg) is not "multitimbral" - meaning, I can only have (1) program on the keyboard play at a time. This can be very limiting obviously... So my current work around is to sequence the midi out into the 1k, then record the playback of the audio so that its at least in time the way I originally played it... but then, I have to actually reproduce the performance on the pads again since its now a sample in the MPC.

Long story long at this point - it would be SO MUCH easier if the 1000 was simply equipped with the DIRECT RECORD feature. I need that in my life!

Any seasoned users of the JJOS please chime in with your 2 cents.

Best

Hello,
Which JJ OS are you using?
This feature has evolved a lot between all the different OS versions.
The main drawback of JJ audiotrack is that you can't use this feature while the MPC is looping. (There is a looper in recent versions that tries to overcome this limitation but it's still far from being perfect)

My bad, I didn't see your signature. It's possible to try OS2XL for free. Just download it and try by yourself. It's the best way to figure if it can fit your needs. (AUDIO type track in main screen and mode + pad 11 for LOOPER mode)

Hey apologies for just getting back, busy with work.
I think you actually answered my question with your first response, so thanks.
Seems like until the JJOS officially has the same feature as the native Akai "direct record" then jj is not for me.

Thanks for the info.

How does the Akai "Direct Record" work differently? I use the audio tracks on JJOS1 all the time. You simply stop your pattern - select an audio track - then REC + PLAY START and you'll get a 4-beat count in and then you're recording! It automatically stops at the end of the sequence.

You can then take these audio recordings and put them into their own program as single-shot samples that are perfectly cut to loop well... because you just PLAYED them to loop. This is an integral part of my MPC workflow and I'm curious how the 2500's "Direct Recording" is any different.

Please holler back, now I'm VERY curious because I'm thinking about getting a 2500 after I get the new pads for my 1K. :-D

I'm able to achieve the exact same result already with the native OS and just midi by a few simple steps, eg.

1. Set a track to MIDI and play my instrument while recording in all necessary midi data (over an existing beat)
2. Go to the record screen and simply press play to trigger recording and then reproduce performance via a sample on the pads - this way I still have a perfectly played sample that I performed over beat - but the main pain the ass is having to reproduce the performance again as a sample now in the MPC.

What I would much rather do is exactly what direct record offers -
Press play
Record synth while playing the beat
Capture performance on the track eliminating the extra steps I described.

The main catch is being able to listen to the beat while recording in what I'm playing. Direct Record does this flawlessly on the 2500.

I think you are overcomplicating the issue.

JJOSXL allows you to record audio as the rest of the sequence is playing. As much as 32 audio tracks can be stacked up to the limit of 128MB ram.

I don't see how you are doing it but if you cannot listen to your sequence playing WHILE you're recording the audio track there is something going wrong with your workflow.

It is also absolutely possible to route individual outs into external FX boxes and back into the MPC, recording them as audio track.

You may find yourself to trim a few milliseconds from the audiotracks to align them perfectly on the grid, as a small drifting can be there, nothing major for a pair of fully functional ears, thou.

It is also possible to play along without recording, just allowing audio in to be passed through filters and FXs, processed as MONO+MONO, per chan or STEREO.

That's JJOSXL: WHAT DO YOU NEED MORE?

PEACE

Hmm... I keep hearing conflicting information on the ability to record an audio track "while listening to the beat play", hence my original post... But based on your input this is totally possible with the JJOS.

As long as I can work the exact same way in the video pasted below, then that pretty much clears everything up.

The way I'm currently able to produce audio tracks right now on the standard OS is by recording a normal midi track in first with my microkorg, then (since you can actually play the sequence back while in record mode), all I do is send the audio from the microkorg to the record inputs on the MPC and press play in the record screen. After the instrument track is recorded in as a sample, I trim the few seconds of dead audio off the beginning until it hits the first transient and assign that sample to a pad. Then the last step is to reproduce the performance as a sample by triggering that new instrument sample on a new track.

This is obviously a shit ton of steps to do such a simple thing so that's why I need that "direct record" in my life or the JJOS equivalent if it exists. lol.

AUDIO track will sort that all out for you. Create an AUDIO track, set it to rec your inputs, play your sequence so that it'll rec to that track all in sync and if needed trim a bit of empty buffer from the start. Done.

Yup, the "license" is then fixed to your hardware. You can download and try for free before purchase. Note that when you install OSXL you'll lose you INTERNAL memory (NOT cf or hd though) as the OS requires some extra space, but the internal memory is super small and useless anyway.

steezo! wrote:Dope. Well it sounds like its possible to do what I want after all then. So is the JJOS2XL just a 1-time purchase of $123? The site is confusing as hell.

Download the jjos2xl without paying for the license. Test it before you buy it, you won't be able to get a refund after a purchase.
