Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By emanuellauria Tue Mar 25, 2014 10:25 pm
Hi, first post here.. I just got a 2000XL from ebay and I think the output board doesn't work, but I don't know how can I be sure?

I can set the outputs on the INDIV tab from 1 to 8, but that doesn't change anything, the sampel is still coming out from the stereo main outputs. That means I was fooled right??

I opened it and the board is there, connected and looks ok....

Please tell me I was so I can go kick that guys ass.

Thanks.

You didn't say so I have to ask....
Did you turn up the level on the INV screen as well as setting the 1-8 output?

The level was already up. All channels on STEREO and INDIV tabs are all the way up. Also, the sample was coming out of the main stereo outputs, and not the output #1 of the outputs board. If the level was down, i wouldn't have heard anything.

Well you can route the signal through both the main stereo output and the individual out at the same time if both levels are up.
Have you tried the usual sorta thing, re-seating the ribbon connector of the 8 out board to make sure it has a good contact?

No need for violence.

Are you sure you assigned the correct pad to the specific output you are trying to test? Are all outputs 1 through 8 failing?

Are your samples in stereo or in mono?

Make sure the ribbon cable is plugged into the slot for the 8-outputs and not the floppy or IDE connector.

There are two fuses located on the 8-output board at locations FS501 and FS502. Check them for continuity.

Ok, i'm not mad anymore :P

Outputs working. Actually the sample comes thru both outputs, the STEREO and the individual output selected.

I don't know what I was doing wrong, I must have switched cables or something.

Thanks for the info!

@MPCHunter
To save time and not creating another post to get jumped on perhaps you can assist me here.

I've recently taken a 8 out board from a s3000xl with the following info printed on it
"PC(#) 8PARA L6036A501A 430218J MADE IN JAPAN"
not sure if this is the Mutec board or the Akai one.

Either way have replaced the ribbon cable very carefully and installed in mpc2000xl (grey) and when it goes to boot it hangs before the OS loads. Its definitely plugged into the IB208P port and the cable orientation was matched from the s3000xl cable.

The silly thing was I didn't check to before dismantling from the s3k but with the 8 outs removed it works flawlessly so can assume that the S3000xl is fine.

MPC2000xl works fine with 8 outs removed.

have replaced ribbon cable with different ribbon cable and connector with fresh cable and connectors in the same orientation as the installed s3000xl cable and tried in both the MPC and the s3k and still no joy.

Have tried in another MPC2000xlMCD with 8 outs installed that works and same thing happens here. Boards look the same. Cables in similar orientation and style.

Will be taking it in to put on the test bench on Monday but thought I would try here to see if I missed something.

IC522 is upright and intact no shorting visible.

does anyone have a schematic so i can power and test sans MPC? would be most helpful.

Thanks for you thoughts in advance people.

That looks like an Akai part number, so probably the Akai board.

Are you sure that the cable is oriented so that pin 1 on the 8 output board is connected to pin 1 on the MPC IB-208P connector?

Maybe check the two fuses on the 8 output board, that MPCHunter mentions above, for continuity.

Shouts.
Continuity is the next step, hence why its hitting the test bench tomorrow.

As far as the pins go there's no numbering on the board that I can see can anyone make some suggestions here as to which is 1 possibly? both on the expansion board and on the MPC board?

Peace.

No probs. Did that get it working?

 I'm used to kiwis talking smack about aussies, I go to NZ regularly for snowboarding, and a kiwi skier friend reckons I only come over there to molest their sheep, his nickname for me is sheep shagga, as he likes to draw on my campervan windows...

lol lol lol thats pretty much a standard response to Aussie snow boarders here. Haven't had time to try again (kinda over painstakingly doing pins on floppy cable) Will report back in the next couple of days if I'm successful.
Just good to know that the board is an AKAI one really.

Thanks again for all your help and suggestions.

Update time.

So apart from being bed ridden for the last few days I did manage to get to the shop to put the board on the bench.

Fuses were fine and was about to start with the cables again when my genius boss suggested,

"why not desolder the connector from the board and replace it with a floppy driver connector? then you can just plug in play from board to board?"

Normally I would ignore this but luckily where I'm working is a repair shop and they have all the right tools for the job.

Even better the boss did it for me so its all professional and clean (rather than amateur and shit if I had done it).

Pin orientation confirmed thanks to Simon and badda bing badda boom all 8 outs working perfectly.

so that would be my suggestion if your confident enough would be to resolder the connection making sure you use a floppy connector that has ALL the pins in it.

Hopefully that's of use to someone and Simon thank again for being a GC over heckling and help. :-D
