this drive works directly in 'cable select' mode with a small adapter:

no PATA to SATA conversion needed!

alternative for $80 total (as of the time of this writing), also IDE so no conversion to SATA needed:

Thats almost perfect, I dont think I need a bigger drive for the 4ooo. So you can have the cd drive installed also? I think some people had to remove the cd drive when they installed a ssd.

it works just like it was the original hard drive. nice and quiet, not hot at all. that and the noctua fan and im set! now to paint this damn thing.

oh yeah, 127gb is the limit for a drive on mpc4k.

yeah cd drive works

This is good to know. Only reason I have not done it yet is the cost. There was a topic about this a while ago. Seems like such an expensive mod.

Though I would appreciate the decrease in weight. I tend to move my MPC4000 around a good deal.

In my Z4 I disconnected the HDD (it was too noisey) and have just used an external scsi drive that I own and usb thumb drives.

I may buy one of these when the price drops more. Hopefully that will not be too long from now. At $190 that is the cost of some gear that I want.

Thanks,
Ian

prices will only go up on a fringe product unless there is a price drop across the board on SSD technology. but ide is dead except in industry and retrofitting which is niche, fringe. thats how it goes with old technology. ram for old applications is expensive stuff compared to new ram simply because there is not enough demand to keep order numbers high.

Yeah but it's double the price. :hmmm:

The Kingwin adaptor cost me £10 and I priced up a Samsung SSD for £70. I must be missing something…

well, i bought it for my mpc 1000 and it didnt work. it worked in the 4000 so i thought id post it up.

$200 isnt a big deal for me tho. my bad for posting something that was twice as expensive as the other technology. perhaps that other thing is a better choice.

Thanks, for me thats perfect. I dont want to take out the cd drive. Ill wait till this hard drive goes out. Hopefully the price will come down.

What happens when you have a ssd and you hit "no spin"?

I'm afraid this is absolutely correct. Probably the only chance we have of getting one of these drives for cheap is if some retailer decides to run out the last of their stock at a discount.

80 quid for the SATA plus adapter solution isn't that far off $200 really, and I have to report that it looks like my Kingwin adapter has failed. The problem is time related in that everything works great for a couple of hours then the load screen freezes, and shortly after that the whole machine. It depends what you're doing at the time as to what happens. I've got another drive in there which is a Sandisk 80 Gb IDE 44 pin and that is working perfectly with the socket converter.

I can't believe the SATA SSD is failing so it has to be the Kingwin, but I could be wrong. I'll get a SATA to USB box at some point to test the drive.

The machine didn't get used for a few months as I was overseas and then moving house, then when I got it running again (to do a job) it was ok for a few days then I got the failure. It feels like its power related (power for the drive is handled on board the Kingwin adapter), maybe a failing cheap electrolytic capacitor, as they don't like to be unused for long periods of time, but 3 months isn't a long time unless it was a crap quality capacitor or just a bad one that slipped through.

So, good to know these drives are compatible! :)

How fast loading/saving times you get with the SSD? 128GB USB sticks are cheaper but if this is super fast it might be worth considering...

You only get as fast as the bottleneck will let you go, IDE is that limitation, no matter the hdd.
