It's ironic how before the internet, people would photocopy whatever they liked, and nobody gave a shit. But now, with digital media, the very same process without the need for paper, is considered to be a cyber-crime. Ultimately, its all about power, control and access. The publishers of the book stand to make a lot of cash simply by meeting existing demand for it, so why don't they just do a reprint? Printing costs would run to say $10.00 per copy for a 200-300 book run, maybe even less for a 'grey edition'.
Of course there are some people who don't want the publishers to do a reprint. Why? Because they already have the book and only paid $20-30.00 for it. They want YOU to pay up to $500.00 for their copy, they want the kudos associated with limited edition products, they want to feel special. Can you blame them, or it that just selfish?
Moral of the story, if you ever write a book or manuscript of any description, do not sell out to a publisher just to get the thing published for 'free'. Retain ownership and copyright of your work. Pay your own publishing costs and keep control of YOUR WORK.
Put food on YOUR table for years to come, don't let a publisher take the food from your plate.
