1.7 just finished?

Specify.

He is asking them to focus on finishing 1.7, without getting distracted by this standalone prototype.

He is not saying that 1.7 is finished.

Yeah, I misread. My bad. I'm a bit tired, it's late over here.

the one with the mpc redaisance is that a laptop in front of it? And is it in any way connected??

thanks for your elaborations

The Dell tablet (which is quite nice, btw) in front of the MPC is also running Windows Embedded Industry 8.1, but is unrelated to the MPC. It's actually the tablet for the Micros portable point of sale app.

The only MPC connections used on stage are audio and power.

Welcome here, I'm new here as well.

Question: is the Intel Quark you're talking about the same as the Quark on the Edison?

Is Akai retarded? Instead of attempting things you know you already suck at and failed at, why not go the route that you're a powerhouse in already and make a real hardware mpc!!! Windows Akai tablet mpc whatever = bankruptcy hardware mpc=$$$$$$ like is everyone that works for this company a complete retard?

By creating a standalone MPC with a mini computer inside, it means the work they've put into the Ren can effectively be ported to the new machine without too much hassle. So while you may not be able to load it up with 20 convolution reverbs, you would still have a super powerful machine in hardware MPC terms.

I just hope they get the ergonomics right. They also need to allow for the fact that people will be leaning all over this thing using the touchscreen, so they need to build it to last. 8)

Yes, with the previous screen issues we have seen, I would be worried about a touchscreen, the lifespan of it, and replacement availability when it breaks.

Not sure about current Akai's expertise in hardware MPCs, the MPC1000/2500/5000 were not that great, in terms of where Akai left them when development was dropped.

A harware MPC based on Windows and MPC Software would most likely have a longer development lifespan than something based on propreitary hardware, and they would not have to start again from scratch if modifying MPC Software to run on embedded Windows/NUC PC.

What is the difference anyway, really, between proprietary hardware and embedded Windows/NUC PC?

It looks like a 7" screen on the prototype, and hopefully they won't skimp on it and put a completely plastic one on there. It needs to have a glass capacitive screen. It's not exactly bleeding edge technology these days.

Obviously MPC Stuff will still charge a few grand for a replacement though.

I've not watched this yet but they were obviously talking about the MPC on Sonic Talk.

Edit: They discuss it from around 10 minutes in.

I just finished looking at the keynote, "Windows and the Internet of Things".

And I truly didn't know that windows/ Microsoft was and is on so many different devices.
It's second to amazing.

regarding the sonic state podcast:
moderator nick batt acted on the authority of "an insider" when he said...
[The new MPC] is gonna be available at the end of this year.

so the ren is definitely dead by now imho.

The show host Nick Batt, tells that the release of this new MPC will be at the end of this year. He was informed by an insider. The Ethernet port is explainable, since you'll need to update the software and flash-chip on the device.

One think is for certain, I won't be preordering this time. :!:

And certainly not, until my Ren is loaded with proper updates (bug fixes and better features). As I said, replacing a buggy device for another is B.S..

- 2008, MPC5000 still buggy (never really fixed, and is now obsolete in a buggy state)

- 2012, MPC REN still buggy in 2014 (bug fixes still in the development), meaning 6 years of buggy flagship devices.

- 2014, MPC ... ? Won't be bug free at the release. The question then becomes, how long will it remain buggy? Considering the legacy, it could take forever as well.

Thank you all for the info provided in this thread. Interesting times for sure, but as they said in the above SonicTalk the stuff here is more evolutionary (what people have been waiting for) than revolutionary. Glad to see it finally taking shape now and at the same time giving Apple some competition too. It's all to the benefit of the end-user.

I took the "end of this year" meaning the MS's "embedded systems"-thingy launch or something... not talking about the mpc there.
