how come when i'm looking in the studio pics thread i see people using mpcs AND rackmount s series samplers?

Different sound, i.e. the s900 is 12bit for more crunch. They used to do it out of necessity, like the SP1200 could only have 10 seconds of sample time so you would have your drums in the SP and your sample/loop/bass in the s950.

Depending on the MPC, more recent racks can have much more fully featured sampler functions.
