HOW DO YOU: go about layering your drums???

I always find combining synthetic drums with raw acoustic drums to have good results when layering. Lately, I will play the same drum break(s) 4 times on the acoustic kit, moving the mic around each time. Of course with one mic, the recordings are pretty lo-fi, but I then chop each rendition of the breaks up into single hits. Then, I'll build a program assigning the 3 best of each drum hit to a pad, with a synthetic/electronic drum layer on it, and adjust the volumes and attacks etc of each sample. Finally, I will play realtime on the pads and record that for a few minutes, and then re-chop those breaks. Kind of a redundant strategy, but really comes off sounding very much like something sampled from an old record. Actually was able to re-create some classic breaks (Amen, Think, Apache) this way...
