Wrong sample rate?

Wrong bit depth?

Has headers in the file that the MPC does not like?

Just check if it is a 44.1kHz/16bit WAV file, if not, resave in that format.

besides the sample format also check your filenames and avoid using too many characters, like described here: http://www.mpc-samples.com/article/mpc-file-naming

if you have many files of the same type e.g. snaredrum01, snaredrum02, snaredrum03 etc. it is better to put the numbers at the beginning of the filename, because it might be that you only see snaredrum, snaredrum, snaredrum on the display, which makes it harder to find particular samples.
