Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By SvenBoogie Sat May 03, 2014 2:48 am
I've got an old MPC2000XL that I'm trying to install a card reader into. Read up about it here a while back, bought one that, by all accounts here, should work. Finally got around to installing it the other day and... nothing. Doesn't detect the device. Here's the details. The card is the Addonics ADIDECF, I first tried a couple of 1GB transcend cf cards, when those didn't work, I dug out an ancient 64mb, 12x lexar card I had lying around, doesn't detect that either.

Not really sure what to do here other than try buying a sandisk card, but those are running comically expensive now, and it's entirely possible it wouldn't work either, so I'd just be throwing more $ away. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

EDIT: OS is currently 1.14

Hmm, I'd read a number of accounts here that this card reader worked with 1.14, but I can try getting 1.20, although with no device working to load it onto the mpc with, it's going to be a challenge...

Tried to update to 1.20

Dug out the old floppy drive, updated the bin.

I am now stuck at the 'Loading:MPC2KXL.BIN' screen any time I turn on the mpc. It never gets past this screen.

FML :?

My situation just keeps getting worse...

I put the 1.20 bin onto a new floppy...

Now, it loads up, briefly shows the main screen, shows 'detecting memory', then all I get is a bunch of code with the 'seq - run - step - memory' options along the bottom. I can't get to the load screen to try to reinstall the os...

well.. I don't know for sure 100% but try opening up the bottom as you probably already have it... unplug all the connectors and replug them back in (one by one preferably) to make sure everything is connected properly.

also, for the time being.. remove the ram sticks if your machine has them because bad ram can cause that too...

see what happens.

Yeah, I just tried both of those things.

Same result.

Loads the bin from the floppy, goes normally until 'detecting memory,' then random numbers/code.

Guess I have a brick now...

That is what I get now every time I even turn the MPC on.

The card reader isn't connected, I put the floppy drive in to upgrade to 1.20.

It said it upgraded, but after it restart it got locked at 'Loading:MPC2KXL.BIN.'

So I got out a new floppy disk, put the bin on there, and retried, and it loaded up, but as soon as it gets to 'detecting memory,' it gives me that screen of nonsense numbers.

I've removed the ram completely, same result.

I've tried another floppy with the bin, same result.

i had a lot of similar issues upgrading to 1.20 from 1.11, garbled screens and all
at least yours has all the pixels in it man!
i eventually ended up renaming the file in all caps (file extension incl) and switching out a bunch of old floppy drives til one loaded it up and installed
then when my addonics sd reader came it just took a couple cable reseats to get it working like a charm

The file is already in all caps. The floppy seems to work fine (I've tried a bunch of others, the issue is the same.) There's no way to install the bin again because due to the random number screen, I can't even get to where I can load the file.

Unless there's some way to wipe the flash rom, I'm screwed.

I've never even had a chance to try using the mpc, and now it's a brick.
