Makin' Drums Sounds

Here's one I didn't share for a long time... prolly nothing new to anyone here...

I take some old drum machine kicks snares and hats.. lets say an old boss or any kind, 808 etc or even stuff off records or basicly anything ... u can find tons on the net... hell mic ya computer desk and bang on it...

Record a sequence with everything seperated,

KIK, HAT, SNR, SNAP... etc

Lay a Low Freq Bass tone over the whole thing just to add bottom,

Have the end of an old record playing with the crackles...

Record that to cassette tape play back eq it and sample that ....

Chop it all up again and replay on ya mpc...

The cassette compresses and makes it dirty, airy and crunchy...

People love my drum sounds cuz they bang... I've got Kits with tons of this **** on my MPC I need to Sell a cd with all this **** is what I should do...

are you talking normal casett tape? any noise issues?

I've heard of many engineers that bounce stuff from PT on to real to real 8 or quarter inch tape, gives you more of a analouge warm/sound, and than back into pro tools but didn't think I could achive that much with normal casett but since its only few tracks going to the tape... hmmm sounds like a really neat trick! who doesn't have a casett deck lying around somewhere,,

YO......take any kick...off of vinyl or a drum sound kit....layer it with an 808....put the 808's frequency to 0-10, filter the other kick to 70-80. Put the decay of the first kick to about 15-20 and have the decay at the start not the end.....the shit will bang....

yea there is a hiss and noise issue but thats the point! you can always click the NR button on it if u wanna reduce noise... etc.. but the cassettes cheap sound is the real trick to it... reel s and stuf f work well also i like the cassette better tho...

u could do this, then after run it through a noise gate so it just adds the tape saturation to the sounds recorded so u dont have noise throughout the song - if you just want dirty drums or whatever..

what should the threshold be? Fast release?

what should the threshold be? Fast release?

set the threshold so that you compress about 6db.. should set you on the right track... just listen and see what you prefer... ....
