Hey everyone,

I currently have JJOS2XL. I have been trying to figure this out for awhile, but can't seem to find the right way to accomplish my goal.

I am preparing a live set with the MPC1000 as the core sequencer. I am trying to find a way to switch patterns on one track of a sequence without changing the whole sequence. I would love to be able to do this, is this possible?

The pattern side of JJOS confuses the hell out of me, and I haven't really grasped the Simult pad. What is the best method to accomplish my goal?

Thanks for the response. This is a great feature but honestly way to simple for what I need live. I'd like to overlay and change patterns on each track. I would have to create a lot of different sequences to do this. Do you know of any other ways? Or is this not possible?

Wait wait wait. I'm sorry. I just found the Pad Pgm feature. This is pretty helpful. I can see how this could create a lot of variations. This changes programs per track though right? Not patterns?

Yeah I assumed this much. I've used the MPC1000 for a long time but have recently come back to it. I really just wanted a way to make variations of drum patterns and to create different poly rhythms on the fly.

Just in the few minutes I have used it you can swap programs per track by using the pads. This means if I have a drum program running on my kick track I can swap it out to trigger samples for a minutes. Creates some interesting variations especially because I am triggering a lot of hardware synths.

you mean pattern to pad? in XL you can assign a pattern you make to a pad, but it has to have a target track. This means if you go to another track you can ten use 64 patterns on the track you want. or more if you change program or pattern set. There was 20 pattern sets to, not sure now.

So yes it is easy to do though you have to make the patterns first and assign to a pad. But its not like it will change sequence just change goes over it, but that means you just mute or do this method from the start to get around this.

You have up to 200 bars total for patterns. each MPC program can have its own banks of live patterns that you want to send. It has loop function to. I do this with foot switch to select MPC banks and have usually patterns in same bank like C that is associated with hardware and bank C has different things depending on the program pattern assign in the different programs for different synths. This way say a filter parameter midi cc for one synth is set to 107 and and another is set to 74 I can set two pads next to each other that sends a 4 bar sweep of these different midi cc data entries that I made.

So you can create macros in effect of different midi ccs and make them trigger from a pad press and this is assigned to a track that goes out to your midi device via channel select.

It is different in OS3 that I am on now so some things are different in OS3 with patterns but its generally the same idea. It is a good idea to have idea first as you can make anything a pattern and can make too many, or forget where they are months later so i try and stick to a standard format of my own and that helps.

All this applies to ANY MIDI. go crazy cos you can do sysex to in the patterns, program changes, (though there is a pad to PC), midi notes, CC data,

So I can make one set to change a rack FX units mix output from a pad. I can make 16 bar filter sweeps and do that from a pad. I make a bassline and drum break chops patterns and you can loop them. This gives a patch phrase kinda feel to if you do you chops right. This is say over a sequence that is playing then drop in you bass and breaks that loops and then you can send even more stuff like filter changes or LFO speeds by another pad all on the same bank to different hardware or MPC itself.

Use Pad Status mode. You can start and stop a pattern on a pad, and reassign which pattern is triggered by each pad, and even redirect where the pattern sends its midi (ie to other tracks, or patterns thst send program changes, etc) and transpose them (which can result in patterns triggering new sounds... think of a single note oattern triggering a kick, you can have a program of all yiur kicks and transpose the pattern to trigger a new kick..). the downside is that the launch of a pattern is not quantizied, and playing patterns will stop if you exit this mode. but if you are ok with the limitations its actually pretty powerful.

This is definitely what I am looking for. I am not sure if this is correct but if I go to "Mode" --> "Pattern" --> "Next" is this the mode you are talking about? I don't really care for this because if you exit everything stops. I see this as a big problem when performing live.... Is there another way to do this that you are talking about? If so, how can I learn to do this?

I really appreciate your answer too. I am looking for the complexity and flexibility you are talking about for my live sets.

I have tried this and it makes me nervous that everything stops if you exit. I also am not sure if this is quite what I need. The problem I experienced was I could only play one pattern at a time in the pattern bank.... Can I create other pattern banks? I'm pretty confused about this still.

No you want to make them first. This link above is how you write tracks with patterns you made.

Like I said above you can use patterns in the main window but will stop when you go into some screens.

The last link also has the info on sets to that are not in OS3 I believe from memory.

So like I said before it is very flexible and should do what you want with a little forethought and work, depending on what you want to do. Remember to that its a whole bars so you can stick in just midi CC data only so it sends messages to synths. If you want half a bar, only write half and copy and paste to make one bar. You just have to think about what you are doing and make it.

So try those steps in the links above and you should be able to get up and rocking in no time.
