I switch cards all the time on my 1000w/JJ while its on. Though I'm unsure if the model or JJOS would cause anything to be different where it would be an issue on the 500. Good luck!

not me, i hot swap a lot. not in save mode or load mode, usually I'm in seq mode when i do it,. i hot swap from the 500 to the 1000jjos and back,. well maybe not all the time but at least a few times a month.. yes, it says u are sposto shut off the sp when card swapping, i have a few friends who own the sp and one friend shuts his off, another friend doesn't shut his down…my friend who shuts his down was complaining about the one who doesn't shut down cause he borrowed his sp for a show due to his being broken and he was just hot swapping cards right and left… so I'm not sure, but due to the one dudes shit being broken who hot swaps i would say don't follow that guys practices. lol!!

You should hot swap when nothing is playing on either machine. You can have them on but don't access anything until the swap is complete and gently too. Just because its called a hot swap doesn't mean to flip them in and out like a madman. Insert gently and remove them softly.

And to emphasize what Ill said, I never switch while something is playing or loading. Actually, I switch while im in the load screen and see the file list go blank when I pull the card and populate when I insert the new one. Just to be safe though, I'll probably start doing it only from the main screen from now on.
