Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

Just got my MPC a few days ago. I very quickly fell in love and I'm slowly getting into it. One question I have is this:

What's the logic of the default pad allocation? Chromatic seems to make a lot more sense to me and I'm not understanding why the default option is arranged as it is. Perhaps there's some bigger picture I don't see...

Please enlighten me!

The default pad assignment issue goes back to the original MPC60, and remember the MPC was initially designed to program drums/percussion, not instruments.

The MPC pre-dates any universally accepted MIDI standard (including GENERAL MIDI), so Linn appears to have used an assignment system that made sense to him at the time, probably lifted from his earlier drum machines LM-1, LinnDrum and Linn 9000.

Successive MPC's have stuck with this 'odd' default assignment scheme mainly for compatibility reasons, but include the option to change the pad assignments to chromatic or as the user see's fit.

Save a chromatic pad layout as your default, or plug in a MIDI keyboard, and you're good to go...
