Noob question - Loosing multi when loading samples

So i've only read through the the first userguide, so the answer may be documented somewhere i've not found yet... but it happens (sometimes) that when i load a new sample, my multi gets wrecked. the programmes loaded into my parts disappear and my effect set-ups get lost. i still have the sequences though. i just have to go and set it all up again. :fku:

there must be something real simple i'm doing wrong. any ideas?

You have to assign a number to the multi so that you can use midi events to select the multi.


Assign numbers to these fields:

1. Multi window>>>LIST>>>multi no.

2. Multi window>>>MIDI>>>MIDI CH & Prog No.

3. Main window>>>Pgm change

It starts at page 127 of the ref manual. I also assign programs a number.

You dont have to use more than one multi. I use only one mostly. I just load programs into the multi.

When you learn how to use it you can make it work for you. The 4000 setup can be tedious, but you only set it up once. You can even make a template.

It can takes years to learn the machine.

I've had mine for 10 years and have barely scratched the surface of it's capabilities (meaning mostly used the functions a typical drum sampler or MPC has). Although I have delved into deeper areas to explore and educate myself.

Don't expect to cop and master it overnight, it won't happen.

Maybe you should stop posting new threads everytime you stumble and 'put some mileage on the clock' along with your RTFM time.

Don't try to learn too much all at once, and you'll be just fine.

Multis are a hindrance in the 4K and add to the unnecessary complexity of the machine for most users.

IMO they should have ditched the dead wood when they interbred the MPC with the Z series, and made everything saveable at the Program level.

All multis do is let you save your FX and panning settings for a bunch of programs. They're like a mixing desk with total recall (indeed, Ak.Sys shows them looking like that)

you're right of course. time will be the best teacher. though, i've only opened 2 threads where the answer was somewhere in the 120 pages of the original manual, which i'd already read. one of my issues i solved myself from doing just that.

now of course, i could have spent a few weeks to discover individual answers. re-reading the manual and exploring, but surely the point of this board is to get quick answers from people who know?

i really hope i don't need 10 years to learn this machine...

anyway, if there is a limit to how many noob posts allowed, let me know. i'll try not go past it. :twisted:

My comments were 'tongue in cheek' prompting.

A lot of the manual may not make sense to some people, so providing you have actually read it first and failed miserably to achieve the desired outcome, we are always here to help. :wink:

You could do it in 5 years if you give up work, college, family, relationships, TV, Internet browsing, sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll, alcohol, holidays, sleeping...

No limit, but you might get more in-depth/extensive help when people see that you have tried several dif options on your own and you just can't get through it.

Why not just look and work it that way? Pretend the multi is at the program level. :-D

Theres quite a few features I dont use often. I think sometimes people get overwhelmed with the capability, its hard to see the simplicity.

It's not really an issue with my own stuff, but more to do with creating sample packs and the likelihood of how people will use the sounds.

In an ideal world we'd have the option to save Q-link assignments directly to Programs, so people could cherry-pick a few Programs and be up and running with assignments tailored to the sound. Multis get in the way in that instance.

It's a bit late in the day for feature requests now though. :mrgreen:
