Maschine Midi CC learn - how does it work?

I want to assign certain parameters to my Maschine hardware knobs. In the manual it says to right click the parameter and select Midi CC learn. It then says to turn the knob on my hardware that i want to set it to. Sounds simple enough and yet it doesn't work.

I have tried with just my Maschine plugged in to my interface, i've tried with midi out to midi in on my interface and also vice versa and no cigar.

I know I'm probably being a complete simpleton and missing something obvious but i cannot get it to work.

All parameters I'm trying are definitely assignable.

If you have any idea where i'm going wrong please let me know.

do you want your maschine controller to send midi cc data?

if so it has to be in midi mode...

I probably didn't explain very well.

When i open an instance of Kontakt (or any other VST) inside Maschine, I can right click a parameter of the chosen instrument (such as volume, tune, a filter etc.) and at the top of the list of 'external sources' is 'learn midi CC#'. I think this means that i can assign knob 1-8 of the hardware to the chosen parameter. I'm not talking about macro controls here either.

I found this video that shows what i'm trying to achieve. He showcases exactly what i'm trying to do at about 1'20"-2'

seriously, that´s what these **** are for...

macro controls are

1. saveable on a per plugin basis

2. learnable

I thought macro controls were on a group level

If I can have, for example, a different plug-in on pads 1-4 with macro controls on each then that would work for now. It will still prove inadequate though if I ever needed or wanted more than 8 parameters per plug and I'd be back to square one.

you can assign more than 8 parameters. they will be split into several pages.

OK cool, I think (as per usual) i have misunderstood something and got the wrong end of the stick!
