buying a used 2000xl

oh, i see what you mean.

well obviously the first thing you need to check is the screen. if there is any lines, missing pixels, anything at all like that.... don't buy it. One missing pixel means it's begun happening and the whole screen going missing is coming soon.

the outputs... make sure the sound is coming out the machine properly. it probably will be.. but if there is something wrong with that, it would suck.

buttons... make sure all buttons work properly. Sometimes the tact switches under the plastic buttons wear out... that can be fixed with soldering, but it's a **** to do that work on a newly bought machine.

check the note variation slider. it isn't the most used thing on the mpc... you may never use it... but hold shift and push the after button to pop the screen up for it and try it out.

pads... they wear out over time. you can install new sensor sheets easily enough... but if pads are completely dead with 100% non functionality.. you can't use the machine properly until that is fixed.

floppy drive or cf reader... check if those work properly. they probably will, but sometimes people break their stuff.

Like mr_debauch said, XL with a worn out LCD display unit (i.e. has line, or even a pixel that is not working) is a total deal breaker. Unlike other MPCs, MPC-2000's replacement LCD is notoriously hard to get. MPC-2000's LCD display unit is a proprietary unit, so there is no compatible LCD screen available in the market.

(There was reverse-engineered LCD display unit for MPC-2000 avaiable from a major MPC parts supplier a few years ago, but it had a lot of problems, and (therefore) it is no longer available.)

But other parts like tact buttions, rotary encoder for jog wheel, and variable fader (which you may not even use) are all replaceable, if you have basic soldering skills.

I replaced all the small tact buttons rotary encoder and fader on mine.

And, in my opinion, I don't recommend 2000 classic, because it is harder to repair (opening XL is much easier than classic), a bit bigger and heavier, and file support is not good, and you have to use floppy or SCSI device, and the display doesn't tilt (2000's display's viewable angle is not wide, so I wasn't happy about it), and 2000 classic is not that cheaper than 2000XL in used market.
