Wish I had 16 Q-Link knobs on the MPC Studio

I got the Studio instead of the Ren because I didn't need another audio interface and wanted a smaller footprint on my desk. I love it but there are times when I wish I had all 16 Q-Link knobs available at the same time (for sample edit and effect tweaking).

Is there any way I can get that functionality... like with some midi knob controller?

...but i doubt you'd be able to get it to work nice with the mpc software... like i doubt you could use the midi fighter to set start/end times on samples, pan/level 16 tracks at a time, but hey i guess it could be possible... just not probable

That looks really cool but I would be scared to be the first person to try integrating it I'll email them and see if they will try for me.

For $200 unless I knew it worked good I would rather sell my MPC Studio, Focusrite 2i4 and buy a used Renaissance. More likely I'll just wait for the next gen Ren and put up with scrolling the Q-Link for now.

Doesn't the Studio q-links turn into a 5 tier vertical focus strip when connected? It might not be possible.

yup. the mpc software, as far as i'm aware, doesn't let you map external midi controllers to the q-link functions. if you could map that sort of stuff, anyone could download the software and set it up to work with any midi controller.

if you want the q-links to act like a ren, i'd agree with your plan to buy a ren, either now or wait for an announcement and release date for the ren ii.

There are 4 vertical q-links and one extra on top to scroll between the 4 sets of four. You only get one set of vertical 4 at a time.

So if I was going to say edit my start point for a sample I would have to move that top one between group 1 (the start point movement) and group 4 (the zoom and scroll). I reach for the mouse as soon as I think about doing all that.

I think I would be faster, less mouse, and less thinking if I could just reach for the knobs but I didn't think about that when I bought it.

I would of gone the studio if it had all those qlinks.. or if the software utilized zoom for how large or small in increments you could trim, like in jjos... I love chopping on jjos the most..

As evil mentioned above, you can do this on the studio using its 1 column of q-links to zoom in and out and to trim in large or small increments at beginning or end of slices. I do this on the studio or on screen with the mouse in software.

There is only one physical row of q-links but I found it not too much of hassle to use the Q-link banks on the studio just as we use the banks for the pads... takes just an extra 2-4 seconds to Scroll the top studio q-link to which bank I choose to use.

This few seconds may be a pain to some but U can also speed that workflow up by clicking the bank in software, since the GUI does show all 16 q-links on screen. I may one day scoop a used Ren, or even wait to see whatever the next generation of mpc controller and software may bring should that come down the road....

The real pain is that the dials are worthless not the limitation of how many there are.
Not sure what Akai was thinking with those flat, slippery Q-Links?

If the dials had a surface you could grip, were high enough to properly grab or at least some indentation then the matrix method used would be fine.
As it stand now it's the one true failure point in the design of the Studio.

I understand your pain if you place one finger on the studio 'dial' and turn it, but after my first day, I started placing index finger on one side, thumb on the other, and it became a habit of dialing into whatever setting I am working on.

I have yet to try the Ren but I did not want ot pay double for and audio interface that I was not going to use and liked the flat design with less knobs and button or need for power cord. I guess I was thinking mobility and not breaking knobs when I slip it in a backpack or luggage bag... As I mentioned I may still get a used Ren one day to keep at the house and take the studio along with me.

As old school hardware guy, I have adapted more than many of my fellow hardware guys that I know and do not mind doing more with mouse and keyboard, on the larger pc/laptop screen.

Just as they may one day make a new REN design, I hope they make a new studio design, or something between studio and Ren, portble without need to plug it in (hopefully FAR off... Get this one right for those that have been fans of mpc for many years!)

It'd be dope if mpcstuff do some rubber ones.
I have both ren and studio, I enjoy the later in my lap at the sofa,at home.
But the disks are a pain.specially the free ones that are q-links. The locked ones (change q-link bank and jog wheel) work better, but not perfect anyway.

The Q-Links are bad because they lack a top surface for spinning as well as being to low for an average hand to grab.
They feel even worse when you own both the Studio and Renn.

If MPC Stuff did address this it would be a highly desirable product with the correct price.

Would have been a far better point for them to address the Q-Links on the Studio instead of offering the aftermarket pads.

i'm just sayin, if the tops are so flat and slippery (i've never used studio), could a bit of grip-tape or something help? it would be cheaper to apply a ring of grip tape to the controller than to buy replacement q-links from mpc stuff (if they are ever stocked).
