Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By omarphi215 Sat Jun 28, 2014 11:34 pm
I swapped out the floppy for a compact flash reader years ago.works great, no issues. First card was a 2gig, second one is a 4gig. My question is can I use 8, 16 or 32 gig cards? Seems that retail stores don't carry less than 8 gig cards.. Maybe a silly question but I have seen online that my drive may not read the higher gigs..is that true? I assume it shouldn't matter since it's the same brand card, just larger storage space.
Thanks I'm advance yall

try it... if you are using 2 and 4 gig cards and can get that amount of gigs on each card... you might just have a cf reader that can work with 8+gb cards.

OS 1.20 will only read 1GB (must be formatted in the MPC) so I get 2GB ones at Newegg.com. Been a minute I don't know if the still have them in 2GB.

OS 1.14 can read larger cards. From the post it sounds like you might have a reader that works on 1.20.

This is an XL I'm referring to.

Not near my machine but I'm thinking I have the 1.14 because it does read the 2 and 4 gig cards...the 4 gig has partitions A-E..Imma try the 8 gig ...it son sale for 35 bucks

On the IDE/ATAPI port, OS 1.20 will only 'format' to a maximum of 1GB, in a single 'PC' type partition.

OS 1.20 still formats in the MPC multi-partition 'MPC2000XL' format on the SCSI port.

OS 1.20 still reads/writes the MPC multi-partition format on the IDE/ATAPI port.

Yeah listen to the guy that actually probably touched an MPC in 2014.

Simon is always clarifying vague posts I make. And I salute him for that. :worthy:

Well I tried the 8gb card and when I tried to format it, it says "read disk error" then it freezes the mpc. I loaded a program from my other flash card then tried to save it but there was a time out error. I was able to save a sound and load it from the 8gb disk earlier. I tried again and I still get the time out error. I have the exact sandisk 30mb/s card that I had before..it was 4gb and this one is 8gb. I don't understand why it won't work when it's the exact same just larger. Can some one help me understand. I plan on taking the card back unless of course there is a way to get it working.

Most I can offer is the scenario on my XL.

IDE/ATAPI CF Reader, hot swappable. Limited to 1GB on formatting. I can get the following cards to fromat and read/write properly on it. Although I limit it to the 2GB Sandisk so as not to lose 3GB. I save those for my 1k/2500 use.

Sandisk Ultra 2GB 15MB/s

Transcend 2GB 133x

Lexar Platinum II 4GB 200x

I personally have never used any cards over 4GB, and never dealt with partitioning any CF cards for the XL. I only ever partitioned zips on either OS revision. SO I don't know if anything I've written really helps. But maybe the confirmation on the card models is of some use I hope.
