Using an Apollo Twin?

Howdy doodles,

I am about to start doing some location recording and the jobs won't usually be requiring a lot of microphones so I'm looking at upgrading to a more solid interface. I have absolutely no way of testing any of this out so I was wondering if any of y'all record with any of the UAD Apollo stuff.

Since I won't really be buying a ton of rowdy outboard gear any time soon (if ever, really), the DSP power seems alluring for tracking, which is exactly what I am wondering about. Can you actually track THROUGH these plug-ins well? I hear a "2ms" latency figure but I'm not too sure how real/true that actually is.

If I do not go the Apollo Twin route I'll probably end up going with an Audient ID22 w/ a Mico for a while. Maybe send in my Saffire 40 to Black Lion Audio... so many tough choices.

Any praise/hate for the UAD stuff? I'm really only curious because tracking through them would be awesome but I'm trying to figure out if that is a pipe dream of if this "2ms" is legit or not.

Got the Twin love it, but I also have a Quad. The Twin only has two mic inputs so if you're recording more than 2 mics at a time then I would pass. Also If you use the unison mode and use the plug ins as preamps it eats up alot of power as well. The newer plugs are power hungry so if your able to manage the amount of plugs you use or bounce them as you go then definitely pic it up. I even manage my plug count better on my Quad now because I'm use to working with less power when I travel. Also, I use it with Logic X don't know your set up. Oh it also comes with an adat in which I love to use as well.

Nice feature on the adat in. would pair up nice with mpc's that have adat out. 5000 and 4000 i believe. track 8 digital tracks out of mpc thru it with those fab plugs from UAD. dope!

My interface is the quad core apollo....dawg, get it. You'll love it. The only regret you'll have is not having more processing power haha.

what kind of location recordings are these?

just asking, because if you say track an acoustic jazz combo playing live with a stereo pair of room mikes and they are not playing to a preproduced track, then the latency will have no impact on the recording or your monitoring.

latency only plays a role if the talent should be able to hear his own performance back while playing, e.g. if you record a singer and want to provide him with a little reverb from a plugin in his monitor headphones.

apogee duet is also nice if you just need two channels with great quality and is now on "sale" with the breakoutbox bundeled which gives you proper in and out connectors. this has no dsp for plugin functions, but it is often better to record dry and process later in the mix anyways, or use some outboard pre or compressors if the material demands it.

The great thing about the Apollo series though is that you get to use UAD plugins in your mix stage, which IMO shit on waves. I hardly ever use the print to track feature except when I'm recording vocals. I like to have a compressor on the way in. Other than that it's all in the mix.

I've made the experience, that even if you don't need more inputs at the time you buy an smaller audio-interface (like 2-8 channels), you'll reach the point where you need more inputs. Especially when you use the interface for more, than just tracking stereo sources…
