Has my HD died?

So after a 2 hour session of sampling, i go to save and my machine hangs. I hear the HD spin a few times, then go silent. The machine was hanging so i had no choice but to reboot. And it did, no worries.

But when I went to load some samples, my HD was gone. I had no issue getting samples of a USB, or saving to USB.

Is it correct to say that the operating system is not stored on the HD? That it's a pretty safe bet my HD has actually just died?

Yeah like a computer an HDD not appearing is normally death.

You can use external USB HDDs too if you need a lot of space. Front port, format it FAT32.

I ought to grab one too. I'm the second owner on my 4k, but looking at the wear on it, it's surely a 2002 one. It's a miracle the HDD even still has grease between the platters.

weirdest thing... my HD showed up again last night.

probably best if i buy that replacement anyway.

Indeed. Or at least in the meantime mount the drive to a PC with AkSys and back everything up.

Word. The bad sectors even getting read at all is like a planetary alignment.

Form factor, yes. But I'm not sure if a UDMA HDD is an issue or not as ATA drives are the norm.

ok, things are getting weird. i don't think it's my HD that's the problem, because my CD Drive is also missing... It can't be that both die at once.

Any thoughts?

Check your internal cable connections. Something might be loose.

this is the first troubleshooting activity anyone should do for most weirdness. its funny how many questions this is an answer to. i do this for all oldschool gear right after i buy it.
