Flying with vinyl?

So I will be going to Los Angeles in August and plan on hitting some record stores while there, but will be flying there and back from Connecticut (not many record stores here). I dont know it I should bring it with me for carry on or with my luggage. It sounds like a bad idea to let the baggage handlers toss around a suitcase full of clothes and some records. Any experience or recommendations? Also, any real good stores there? I have heard of Amoeba, Permanent Records, and Record Surplus but not much else. Thanks.

I just brought about 50 records back from China in my luggage... no problem at all.

i always do the carry on thing, but have come back with records and dj mixer in suitacase no dramas.

Do hit amoeba music, that's the only one I've been to in LA but also try to find swap meets, you could probably buy a human being at one of those LA swap meets.

i can tell you its enka music from japan, not chinese music. i make a lot of my beats from stuff like that.

I was talking to a couple guys when I was there and they said from 1979 till 2000 there was NO records in China. Its mostly all records brought from Japan, some Korean but mostly Japan. Some Chinese pressings/recordings do fall in between the cracks but they are pretty scarce.

I have no idea what artist he's playing, I can tell you it that I can't pronounce/read/understand about an eighth of my record collection, just buy up some foreign gems and start sampling.

And thank you to everyone for the advice for flying with records. If I can fit the majority in my carry on that would be good but I will probably put some in the suitcase if I have too many.

Yea wouldn't trust them in checked baggage, I always just carry them coming back since i don't bring back a crates worth or anything but def recommend asking if the store has cardboard vinyl mailers or bring your own. you can fit about 10-20 in a box and you don't have to worry about cracking one in half, bent corners, etc

if your digging over a crate then you should prob post them back in a nice box.

Always wondered how the **** Jrocc and shit get their massive overseas hauls back home.

Sorta related but I just watched an interview with Lord Finesse (i think) where he talks about his friend mailing his clothes back and putting the records in his luggage to avoid the shipping costs. Idk if he carried it all on or checked some of it in or what though.
