My first MPC is on it's way

So I did it, I ordered an MPC 1000. My live hardware dreams are coming to life.

But I've got some more questions before it arrives. For starters after cleaning out the bank to get the 1000 I probably can't afford JJOS anytime soon. But I've got samples that I'd already like to turn in drum programs and I'm not sure the best way to do this to make sure that the work I'm doing now transfers smoothly whenever I can get JJOS.

I was reading that making a chromatic drum program is the way to go? So if I got in MPCMaid or Bluebox and set the pads to chromatic my drum programs should transfer whenever I eventually do get JJOS, right? I'm also not too sure how the MPC loads samples/how to keep my drive organized. I'm sure that's something that would make sense if I had the MPC in front of me but I'm far too anxious. Do all the samples/sequences just kind of live in the root of the drive, be it hard drive or CF card? Does partitioning you drives make sense or does that just confuse the MPC?

Yes, JJOSXL uses a chromatic pad layout starting at MIDI note 36 on pad A1 right through to MIDI Note 99 on D16. Any old style programs (e.g. from Akai OS or free JJOS) will get converted to this order and as such any associated sequences will get messed up.

If you know you are eventually moving to JJOSXL, grab my chromatic template:

Load this up before building a program, rename it and then start assigning sounds.

Before getting JJOSXL, grab the free JJOS and use that rather than Akai OS. Everything you need to know about Akai OS and the free JJOS are in my tutorial book 'Beat Making on the MPC1000':

There was a guy here one time that adamantly refused to use JJ Free even after having it explained it's basically the final Akai OS with bugfixes and the indispensable Global Program Edit. He would not even consider it...while complaining about the Akai OS...

We just left it at...OK enjoy those avoidable extra 64x button presses when editing programs.

And like the OP asked and Tutor explained, yeah just go Chromatic from jump. It's easier, makes controlling synths and VSTs easier. Most drum VST if you ever sync those up are using the pad 1A is note # 36 mapping. So then all your SEQ/MIDI files can be used all over the place if you use software too.

Hey ya'll, so everything has been going well with my MPC1000. It ended being a black one with old style pads but whatever, it's working at the moment. Naturally 2 of the pads just went out completely 3 weeks in. Disheartening but my midi controller/D-10 is doing just fine and I can still reach the mixer mode through the effects menu in the Akai OS (Pad 8 is dead, I believe Pad 15 is also pretty unreliable in terms of pressing but not as important).

But my credit is recovering after a rash of purchases, including the MPC, and am now considering JJOS. I'm wondering though if these dead pads will inhibit me. I've got the lay of the land on the MPC and am getting work done, which is the most important, but upgrading to JJOS2XL and having the 16-part multi-timbral functions, grid edit, all the other good stuff is sounding more attractive by the second. I'd be able to drive this guy just as well as my DAW then.

So to JJOS2XL with dead pads (8, 15, and 3's on it's way out) or save up a bit longer and get new pads and then JJ? Btw, been making all my programs with the Chromatic template so I should be good to go in the JJ world.

i thought some guy was selling pads for 10 each on ebay... i have a whole collection if you want... not splitting it up tho. they all work.

So to be more specific and avoid my rambling posts...

With dead pads would I be able to access all the various mode functions such trim, program, etc in JJOS2XL or free JJOS? Pad 8 to get to mixer mode is dead on MPC atm and can only get to it by [mode] -> pad 12 -> Go2Mixer (F6?).

I'd love to get JJOS2XL and exploit the hell out of multi-timbre mode with my DAWs.

by the pads? no but there is external midi control of pads and buttons in jjos2xl. i have never tried to navigate the os using midi commands.
