Hemiola: triplet rhythm track in 4/4 project

MPC1000/JJOS2XL.

Suppose I have a project with 5 tracks using a 1/16 note grid (so each beat divided by 4). IS It possible (and how) to add a sixth track with triplet rhythm ?

In other words while tracks 1-5 would have 1/16 note grid, track 6 would have each beat divided by 3 (or 6 or 9) instead of 4, all of that in the same project ?

I looked in JJOS2XL manual, but I have not found this information:
for example when in grid edit, I can press, hold "Note Repeat" then several options appear below the grid: 1/8, 1/8-3, 1/16, 1:16-3, etc....
but if I select one of these triplet rhythms, the grid divisions visually DON'T change, ie stay 1/16 notes divisions !

that's it ! how do you record with a different timing ?. What I was looking for is a way to change the grid display for the 6th track and program the track using that new grid (with for example 3 divisions per beat instead of 4). Ihave got to believe that with JJOS2XL it is possible !

This might not be suitable for your application, but have you tried using two sequences and layering with Simult Sequence?

Yes but even for the new sequence, what I was looking for is a way forJJOS2XL to change the grid from 1/16 note grid to say 1/3 grid per beat, since for this project I am programming beats by inputting notes step by step in a gird. So the grid is an important visual aid for that.

I'm unclear as to what you're trying to do. do you need to have the visual bar/beat guide switch back and forth within one sequence between two time signatures? can you double/halve the tempo and select a different, compatible signature?

HE wants the grid on track 6 to grid in divisions of 3s insstead of quarters ..(4ths 8ths 16ths) So for every beat there are 3rds instead of quarters.. if you have quarter divisions in each beat this is the 16th note grid.. I'm not sure what to call 3 divisions ?

MAybe you can achieve this by changing the grid values to 16th triplets? or shift the timing in the loop grid edit mode...

So it seems that consuming is onto wacky triplets and wants the grid to show triplet grid, even though it can already step in triplet if the TC is set and you move or enter note.
The answer is no. Cos you can step in triplets and also just move them in place in grid or sequencer window or step through the track with TC value.
So this bit in the manual you read is right but it wont change grid view at all.

Usually, if a DATA wheel is turned, regardless of the value of timing correct, it will move at intervals of 24 ticks.
If a DATA wheel is turned pressing the [NOTE REPEAT] button, it will move at the following intervals with the value of timing correct.
1/8 = 48 ticks
1/8-3 = 32 ticks
1/16 = 24 ticks
1/16-3 = 16 ticks
1/32 = 12 ticks
1/32-3 = 8 ticks
OFF = 1 tick


So you can step through in that value consuming but you will not get a triplet grid, and you do not need one really if you remember the tick values that make it a triplet. Yeah, so there is no grid changes at all visually, just the stepping value underneath.

correct above. you can zoom in on the track to get greater step resolution.

i recommend a healthy mix of playing it in by hand and using note repeat in conjunction with copy/paste in step mode.

yes, it can be tedious. drum programming often is though.
