Anything that has not been touched. Things people would normally overlook. Anything you can flip properly and no one can name it, put your samples on blast, or get sued over.
I say this because aside from the end result of sounding good, you gotta be orginal and not get caught.
The less success or attention the orginal recording or artist had, the better.
It can be crap cheesy dollar bin records. That anyone else would laugh at. As long as you have soul, you can make real crap, real good.
I added that bit of extra reinforcement for the sake of whatever your research is for. Supportive statements n ting.
Hope this helped.

Like I would say Melvin Bliss "Synthetic Substitution" would be one.
this is a good example of a relative unknown singer at his time but it also is a genius song IMO.
Its really cool to sample crap and make gold out of it but it's also cool to use an already great song and give respect.
As an sampling artist you can choose what kind of feelings you have about the original artist.
You can say
"your shit was so whack, I had to kill it wit da SP1200"
or you can say
"I'm so damn genius. I even make gold out of your crap song"
or you can say
"Your song is so genius and timeless that I had to sample it to show my respect and let the world know what artist they overlooked"
Who would know Melvin Bliss when noone had sampled him.
