What Mixes Well

Hello Board. Im new here. I was excited to find a forum for the MPC!! I think this is tops. Fo Real! Anyway....Im writing to begin a discussion on Mixers.

Im in the market for a mixer for my home project settup. Right now I have the MPC1K and will be adding the Korg LE-88. Im thinking on adding the Mackie VLZ1202 pro to the "mix".

I dont know much about mixers or mixing yet, but this will all come when I have the right equipment to learn from.

Please advise me, my fellow peers with much more experience than I.

Yeah, I know. That was gonna be my next post . What monitors whould I be looking at? I saw some powered KRK RP5's for $149 each on sale. Was that a good deal?

Im using standard house speakers now to hear what I do. Got that "weakest link" thing going, me thinks!! LOL Nahh, really I have those and some really good AKG studio monitor headphones that I use during creation/ production. Play back is on the floor speakers.

when you shop for monitors, look for ones that will project the sound as accurately as possible. don't look for monitors that make music sound nice by adding some extra thump or treble. i got some Behringer Truths for 400, they've now been 'updated' and sold for 300 (bastards), don't go with them.. learn from my mistake. monitors in that price range are decent.. not great but not that worst thing either. i'm not familiar with the monitors you mentioned but at that price range they're most likely gonna be small and won't produce a nice enough bass response to know how you're EQ is going. (someone correct me if i'm wrong)

familarize yourself with the mixes on all your favorite albums. listen to the track and focus on one instrument at a time. on the levels, everything. so when you're shopping for monitors, ask if you can hear your favorite cd through them to see how accurately they project the music, make sure there's no extra bass or treble. of course they're not gonna be the best at a low price range so just work with what you got.

monitor placement is also important, you want them in a nice environment that doesn't produce much bass or echo (inside a big shelf, against the wall, on the floor etc.) the monitors should also be placed at face level so you're not catching any music that has bounced off any surfaces. as for headphone monitors, they're good for referrence but don't depend on them, particularly because of the bass response, it could sound different when listening through house speakers or car systems.

if you want a decent pre-mix for your songs just apply the "listening" tips to your house speakers and work with that.

Or anyone else who has input. I read it all people. Reading is fundamental. And plus, hell, I read technical manuals and understand them, no post could ever be that tidius......so there you have it.

I gather that I should put out some more loot for a decent pair of monitors, eh? But, the most important thing to do is pick a fav song and listen to it, then use that to run trials on the monitors that i'll demo? I feel that. It makes scence to me Q.
