How to make Breakbeat/ Jungle/ DnB on the 3k?

Hey Everyone

Just thought it would be a good idea if there was a post for people to learn how to sample breaks and either timestretch them or make single hits to create Breakbeat/ Old-Skool Drum and Bass on the MPC 3000!

I believe the drum break is the classic 'Amen break'

How do you think the Source Direct guys did it? Do you think its a combination of single hits and timestretch snare rolls and are they using any note repeat on the single hits?

They used an Atari with Cubase and rack samplers in this video:

Just bang your hits into the sampler and then play with the sequencer. Play with NOTE ON instead of just letting the sample play to the end.
Mess with the samples..
Timestretch, reverse... do whatever.. There aint no rules. It's easy. Experiment.
The MPC3000 doesn't do timestretch though. You might wanna invest in an S1000 or above.

I got an MPC3000 last week
I was surprised to find no loop function (for sample tails, etc) and a much simpler sample edit section compared to the older S1000.
I'm using the MPC3000 with an S950 and S1000 anyway, so I'm covered.

Anyway yeah im good to go as well got the MPC 3000 and Akai S950

The Amen break you used did you chop that up on the S950 and remake your own drum sequence or did you just time stretch the break and loop it to a DnB BPM?

Also with the timestretch on the S950 how are you meant to know what % corresponds to which BPM

i.e. how do you find out the original tempo of the amen break and then know which % to timestetch it to?

Been using a MPC for a while but just now starting to cut up breaks and bring some more of the Aphex Twin/ Source Direct vibes back into my productions.

Yeah, just chopped out some hits and loops in the S950. Nothing complicated because it was just a quick tune I made in order to put up on YouTube. Took me a couple of hours.

I just use my ears. I don't care what the tempo is. I tune up/down till it sounds right. I didn't do any time-stretching for this tune.

I mostly only use time-stretching as an effect.

yo, a quick question on chopping the amen-break.

how do you guys deal with the hihats within the break.

I found out while chopping them, they start sounding thin, close to inaudible, which makes 'em hard to sequence.

just make a beat and play it back at 220bpm. you'll be amazed at how a funk or hip hop drum part sounds at twice the speed.
and about your hats, chop it so it sounds good slow.give your samples room to breathe. you might trick yourself into cutting sounds from the amen break too close because of all the ride noise but let that shit ring out.

I chop EVERYTHING into 1/8 notes.
Even of it has 16ths or whatever else in it..

Works especially well for hiphop as well.

Sounds awesome when re-sequenced & keeps a lot of the live feel intact.
