Making 8 16 and 20 bar loops sucessfully

Here is an odd question I am trying to use the MPC in a different way and I would like to hear from folks that might have looped longer phrases. Basically in this situation I would be using the MPC as a live looping situation or better described as a replacement for a rhythm section. I am writing songs on trumpet and using standard A A B A song structure usually. So I come up with a bassline that follows typical song structure like a 12 bar blues for example. I loop it into one long 12 bar sequence and then try my best to make things sound "not looped" and fluid but I find longer loops are much harder to keep in time especially when switching though sequences. I think there are 2 ways to approach this song mode which allows me to just hit play and play trumpet over my different rhythm section parts. However song mode is so mechanical sounding and not very loose or fluid so live mode is preferred but I have only done this in spurts so I am opening up the dialogue here to see if anyone else is using the MPC in this manner and what problems they ran into.

Also I have 3 MPC's to choose from
MPC 2000
MPC 1000 W jj os
MPC 500

I am guessing the 1000 is probably the best candidate for this but I would not mind also trying to do it on the 500

Put more simply
I am saying I am physically playing a bassline that's duration is 12 bars
and then looping that on one sequence in the MPC
then adding more sequences to add variety

Thus using the MPC like live musicians
have you ever used the MPC as an accompaniment instrument
is probably a more clear question
but the true question would be how does one use the MPC as a musical acompanyment instrument to a horn and not have it sound whack repetitive and stiff ?

I think the answer lies in variety which would require more than 2 and 4 bar loops
but I will have more to add to this conversation as I experiment with this idea

Are you looking to add these layers/loops live? That is the most important question at this point.

You're 100% correct - the 1K will be your best bet. Personally, I use the 'Audio Tracks' in JJOS1 all the time. I seem to always find a way to use them and they are the backbone of my MPC stuff. One caveat using them though is that you cannot do this in any sort of live fashion using just the MPC alone. Can these be recorded and layered inside your MPC and then later used as backing tracks? Most definitely!

For organization I suggest that you save each project as a song name in a folder designated for these backing track jams. Keep everything nice & orderly & all that sh*t.

as I am new to using jj os I have not even tried using the feature you are talking about please tell me more about it

I think my approach to trying this will raise a bunch of challenges
because anytime you try to get a machine to sound like an organic rhythm section of humans you are asking for challenges

At the end of the day nothing takes the place of people
but as I wait on bass players and drummers this method will serve as a place holder

I have made way too many dead locked groove beats
time for something new

I will post an audio example later this week but what I really need to do is develop this and post a video so you fully understand what I am talking about. I will try and get that up soon. I am gonna post a video of me playing over kaoss pad loops as its own post. That is an example of what I will be playing over the longer 12 bar loops but its not an example of the 12 bar loops with in the MPC.

It can be done on any sampler. I should know, I loop long passages and keep them tightly fit in a Roland MS-1. That sampler taught me alot. Its all about mathematics.

Lets say you sampled a 2 bar drumloop and its trimmed perfectly with the Start at zero and the End point at 3200. The drum is two bars so you just multiply 3200 by 4, because you plan to play an 8 bar bassline and the answer is 12800. Now you sampled your bassline in, but notice the Start at zero and End point at 13378. Well, now just trim the sample until its 12800 perfectly. This method is good if you don't pitch samples, but if you do, then I suggest to resample after pitching and before trimming those long samples.

I'm coming from the MPC500, the only MPC I own. But did you know you can sample while playing a beat on the 500? Yes you can. Just hit Play while sampling and play bass along to get it correct. The sample will then appear as an acapella and all you gotta do is track it in your beat.
