In most of these programs you can set the time of silence between tracks before you start recording, so the program "knows" where a track ends and the next one starts, this to automatically create separate tracks out of the recording. Most of the time, and especially with older LPs, the programs cannot always distinguish silence from music because if there is some noise (instead of total, pure silence) between the tracks on the LP, the program will see that noise as music. Eventually, you will end up checking each created track, and therefore I just do it manually (which doesn't take that much time). I know Minidisc recorders also have this feature of automatically creating tracks out of one recording by searching for silent passages, but there it also goes wrong most of the time.
