pros and Cons of having mixer and Software?

Do u really need a mackie or other mixer if you have a program like reason 2.5? what would be the pros and cons on having just the mixer, just the software, or both? thanks in advance for the advice.

Both get the same results at the end of the day so it really depends what you find best to use ...... & also what you have room in your studio for.

For example, I used to have a 100% hardware studio, based around my MPC2000 & a borrowed Yamaha 03D digital mixer. That mixer was the best one I've worked with. Now I'm mixing on a Mac G4 with Logic which isn't quite as quick & comfortable as working with a hardware mixer, even though my results are better from an extra few year's production experience. I could still use a mixer, or some hardware controller for Logic but I don't have space in the studio for one anymore.

I used to have a Mackie, but my friend borrowed it and i realized i don't need it afterall. I use the mixer in Cubase now, and a Behringer control surface. My old mixer was nice for monitoring and some basic eq-ing, but i prefer mixing with software now. Even the most basic software has automation, and only very expensive hardware mixers have automation or motorfaders.

both .. im using an old (a bit bulky) tascam M-216 cause its adding the analogue warmth and distorted pre amps rocks - and im kinda oldskool and working faster that way (you probably get that warmth w/ plug-ins in software/reason now adays im recording and multilayering my stuff in acid pro tho' for post produktion... and if u go live **** a mixer is a must... (hmm, ur using reason for that too i suppose:))
