New empty programs created after saving/loading a project

I have encountered this quite frequently:

suppose I create a project X with 5 tracks:

track 1 drum track, program1, say kick
track 2 drum track, program1, say snare
track 3 drum track, program1, say HH

track 4 midi track, program "off" channel 1A
track 5 midi track, program "off" channel 1B

I save all this using "SAVE ENTIRE MEMORY 1"

Then shut off MPC, then turn it on, then load project X.

What I see is that MPC created and assigned a "program 2" or "program 3" to tracks 4 and 5, even though I made sure that the program field in the main window was "off" for track 4 and 5 when saving the project and there was NO programs 2 or 3 (btw, these prog 2 or 3 which I did not create, sit there empty...).
It's annoying as I need everytime to reset manually the program fields to "off" for those midi tracks.

Also if I delete these empty programs I get program field "?off" in main, which is ok, but upon saving then turn off/on they reappear as created and assigned to my midi tracks !

Am I doing something wrong or is it a bug ?

yeah I remind somebody mention that earlier, but I just saved empty drum program called MIDI, and I set it up on all MIDI tracks I think it just needs to have a program.

im pretty sure this is just how it works. if i am reading what your saying correctly, it was the same thing i was wondering about a couple years ago.
for instance, you have a program called chops1, in the beat your making, you assign all your chops to this program and then you save it into a self contained folder called "beat1" and power off your mpc.

now next time you turn on your mpc, when you load up some new sounds, or chop something up, the first program its going to try to create after you assign your sound to the pads from the load menu is chops2.

its doing this because the mpc just remembers what your last program was thats all. you cant really chagne it.

when this happens, i just bypass "chops2" and cusor over to the next program and name it something new. if you ignore it completely, the next time you turn it on, i think it erases it from memory after that, and stores the new program on there. i don thave my mpc in front of my right now, but im pretty sure thats what your asking, and you just kinda have to work around it. its kinda annoying at first, but youll get used to it.

There are definitely some shenanigans with how it decides what programs tracks default to.

Agreed, you can't leave it as OFF. upon saving and re-loading, that (non)-program is unrecognized, and you get it as OFF? in the track, as if it were a missing program (even though it's supposed to be no program).
I use a program called OFF! for whenever I need a sample-less track.


But still, there's some weirdness. The tracks hold some sort of default program ID, and this can be changed unintentionally by means I haven't nailed down. Ever noticed slightly strange behaviour, like the track displaying one program when first selecting it, then jumping to a different one upon REC'ing on that track? Weirdness. And sometimes the default value can be changed to a non-extant program. So it tries to initialize the track from the default value, and ends up creating a new program. This can chain, and after some use, your program list can get cluttered with "Program01", "Program02", "-03", "-04", etc.

It's also tied to the default sequence/track settings that you can set yourself. (I don't remember where it is off the top of my head, perhaps something like main screen track name>WINDOW>[Default] ?) E.g. I commonly name my primary program MAIN, and set the sequence default configuration. All to try and avoid the "ghost default" issue reflected on above. But nonetheless, I eventually see "MAIN1", "MAIN2", etc, magically appearing.
