Weird audible noise from hd, mpc freezing-- vid

MPC 4000 Dying?:



i heard this noise come from where the hard drive is once before but i had been using it for like 7hrs, it came for like 30 seconds then went away never heard it again until tonight. it froze twice, just wouldnt do shit, except the pads would trigger a sound,sample.if i was playing a sequence i couldnt stop it, jogging the wheel doesnt work basically only the volume and the pads work. the screen stays on sequence keeps counting. i reboot and its fine but tonight it seemed sporadic, could happen after 2 minutes or an hour what seems to get it to do it the most is/was loading and saving stuff...im going to try to catch it tomorrow and see if i can intentionally get it to happen. all the drives consistently show up, never have a problem loading or saving just sometimes going from load to main or program to main it just stops responding...check out the video for the noise.

That clicking sound from hard drive means its going to eventually die. Back up you stuff and get a new HD

yup take the drive out and put it in the freezer then back it up one last time and get one of these:

Definitely a failing hard drive.
Get a replacement drive, clone the old drive then keep it moving.
Don't drag your feet about taking care of it as you will end up losing your data on the drive.

313, do you have one of these drives yourself? If so what's been your experience, considerable better/more reliable than drives using adapters?

i do have one of those drives! i dont have problems with it but who knows what the future holds

Not really the ideal place for this question - but I took 313's advice and purchased this HD. Do you need a different type of ribbon cable for it and if so what type? Perhaps I'm just missing something obvious but the drive doesn't fit with the regular cable in the MPC.

Probably need a 44 pin female to 40 pin male IDE adapter, something like...







Some come with a 2.5" to 3.5" mount adapter as well, not sure if you want one of those to mount it in place of the 3.5" drive.

Cheers, Simon. The thing is 313 was saying it's the adapters that fail in the ide to sata config but this was seems to require an adapter too. What's the difference?

The adapters above are simple electrical connection adapters, to convert the 44 pin IDE connectors on a 2.5" 'laptop' drive to the larger 40 pin IDE connectors used in most 'desktop' IDE configurations.

There is nothing to fail in those adapters.

Any IDE to SATA adapter is going to have active electronics, to convert the PATA IDE signals to SATA signals, not a simple electrical connection as in the adapters above.

Not really sure that IDE to SATA adapters are that likely to fail anyway.

My previous MPC hard drive failed with the IDE to SATA config but it's hard to say whether the adapter was the issue. Thanks for the information.

yeah those adapters are passive. they just pass wires to a smaller standard 44 pin connector style.

i really hope my ssd works for a long time. i assume transcend is a decent brand. i dont promise that it will work any better than your last drive, but going from what i read, others have had active IDE > SATA adapters go bad on them. i also assume that native IDE is always better than IDE > SATA conversion. i am only assuming. but of course that assumption comes from years of fixing computers and observing what goes and delineating why. everything i know has gone apparently way wrong at one point or another. technology does not always behave.
