I'm not sure what your asking exactly queereye, but as far as I know the ASR 10 does not come with any sounds. It's a bare sampler just like the MPC. Depends on the quality of sound you put in it.

let me help you out a lil. Like my man said up above the ASR doesn't come with any sounds. A lot of us on here have them. I have two hehe. I have one at home and a rack with me here in VA. But in all honesty its overrated. As far as sounds, you can get a lot of disk off ebay with some amazing sample collections on them. I have a few akai sample CD's that sound amainzing when they are put throught the asr. Also sample chopping is a bieaitch. There is no waveform so you have to eveything by ear and numbers, which becomes easy over time. But since I think you are a newb, I would suggest a fantom X6, thats what I would buy if I was starting, It has a decent sampler, decent sequencer and you get some pads, and you can blow it out with memory and expansion. So if you get one of those and a turntable, you will be set.

there's no sounds that come with it, and the good patch disc are rare.

although the asr has no sounds its filters are hot its a dirty but clean sounding filter the effects are good and its mad easy to use, i wish that the sampling keyboards available now (motif, fantom-s,x, etc) were as easy. one compliant sequencer wise she can be a tad moody when syncing to midi.

"But in all honesty its overrated."

Not at all, it's more than worth it's weight in gold. For the time frame it came out in it was the best and STILL can hold it's own even with less features than newer keyboards.

It's a very good machine but it IS outdated and I would suggest something newer since EVERYONE seems to be spoiled by computer connectivity and swapping disks/USB back and forth from gear to pc/mac. I do it also but back in the day I was just as happy to stick with my ASR and floppys all the same.

Just like everyone above has stated the ASR-10 DOES NOT come with sounds. You have to load, tweak, and arrange your sounds to your liking. Also, don't think that just because you buy an ASR-10 that you will be making Kanye, Just Blaze, or Pharrell beats overnight just because they use this machine. Like everything else it takes time to master, and you have to find a machine & learn it inside out to make hot sh**.

I don't know if that is:

1. A credit to his diligence and/or determination.

or

2. a BIG loss of cool points charged to the game.

I mean, he will have to spend time with it, like with all gear...
If the guy's a newb that started with a MP, let him know that the work on the ASR is waaayy different then on a MPC.
And in my opinion it takes more time to master the ASR then the MP or any S1000/2000/3000 serie.
BTW i'm really happy with mine, I can't deny features are great, and like you said "In the time frame it cames out..." but master it is also bout determination...
And in regard of Triton, Fantom, Motif Worstations yes, there's too much hype around this tool charged to the game...

THE ASR IS A BEAST! BTW it does come with sounds...............just not internal, there should be a few soundsets on your O.S. disk if your lucky ;)
they're not the greatest though. The effects on it are uncomparable and anyone that says it's overrated has'nt really really messed with the filters or effects. As far as the sampling engine every sampler is different in it's own way. From my experience the sampler on my MPC 60, 2000XL, and ASR are all unique and I prefer the warm feel of the ASR-10 vocal and instrument samples to the others. Not to mention the effects! One more thing don't think because the Neptunes and Kanye and Blaze have one you'll be making tracks for Jay-Z or his heir apparent without paying dues, that's like thinking if I buy these Jordans I'm gonna play for the Bulls

Good Luck on your quest, Peace
D. James

It's all good bout FX & Filtrz talk!

Bout the "unique" thing, I feel like I've NEVER read my S1OOO's manual or 3K neither (i didn't own a S3K myself)... I just feel "at home" with this Akai's how to... I think it's the first sampler trade i owned...
When I came to ASR (Ensoniq) i felt the work in a different way that's it!
