One thing you have to remember here is that Akai **** up from the start by thinking people only wanted current MPC's in a computer form. So that's what they made and put out. They weren't anticipating people wanting it to be more DAW like. And that's what created the need for so much catching up to be done as compared to other DAW's. Over time, they are having to basically redo the entire concept of the software, while still keeping it able to be used by the people that have already bought it. That is the reality. You can say all you want how all of this **** should have been there from day 1, but at the end of the day, they put out an MPC, and it did what MPC's have always done (for the most part), not what DAW's have done. So that's why this stuff is so MAJOR for actual MPC users, and elementary for actual DAW user's converting to or coming back to MPC's.
Even though I dislike this moving toward DAW-like functionality (it's an instrument!!!), I can appreciate the "oh no!!!" moment they must have had when they realized that people wanted it more DAW-like. And the even bigger "oh-no" moment when they realized the level of effort would be to get it there.
That being said, I'm hoping that the software doesn't progress to the point where it's not really functional for people that don't want it to be a DAW. For example, if using as a plugin, turn off the MPC sequencer. Don't need both, and it creates a mess. I don't need it to hose VSTs, I do that in my DAW, etc, etc, etc.
At some point I can see them having to make a decision to support one or the other - DAW people, or multi-timbral instrument people. Trying to keep both in the same package will be even more difficult IMO. Or create two versions of the software - which they sort of already do with Elements. Just beef up Elements and use that as the multi-timbral plugin, that doesn't have a sequencer, and all the other capabilities that focus solely on using it as a multi-timbral plugin. Right now it's nowhere near that point, but that's what I think they need to do at some point in the future.
