Can you use an anlog mixer for an controller

ok i really dont want to waste money on an digital mixer so can i use an analog mixer like a mackie onyx as a controller for Cubase or Protools?

no - not as a controller for your DAW in the HUI sense of control.

I don't know of any anologue mixer that you can use as a controller. It wouldn't make much sense either; if you have a control surface, you'll most likely want to mix with software.
There are some controllers that have A/D converters build in though. Like the Tascam FW-1082 or the yamaha 01x, but they're pretty much just as expensive as a digital mixer.

what you can do is run seperate tracks out of your mac and into the desk for mixing and summing, but then you are relying on extremely good converters and that is extremely expensive. And you don't want that, do you?

For cheap control of your DAW you could try the behringer midi controllers. might be alrite epsecially as no audio is passing through it but I don't know the resolution of the faders (and consequently how accurate your fader movements will be replicated)

Why do yo uwanna waste money anyways - what's your goal?

I have one of them behringer things, they work very well. Off course beeing behringer buttons will probably start falling off soon, but it works a treat now and they even managed to supply drivers that work.
I paid about $250 for 8 longtrow faders, the resolution is decent too.
