Will the CDJ800/1000 replace the 1200MK2?

Pioneer has been leading the way with regard to cd players functioning like turntables. Most recently the CDJ 1000 and 800 have been discussed as "replacements" for the industry standard 1200's.

Word in stores (self-proclaimed experts at GC and Sam ASH) and the web is that vinyl DJ's have been selling their technics and buying the CDJ's to play their CD's. They both play cd's at 16X speed and they can stratch, and cue as well as turntables, with CDs.

In addition, they have very precise looping functions that allow you to create delay like effects, and also stratch and have the beat loop to the initial point you want.

Will it happen? Will these become the next tools of the trade? Will turntablists use these instead of technic 1200's?

never.nothin' beats the feel of vinyl.

Isn't that what they said about CD's when tapes were popular?

I don't disagree about vinyl feeling better, but its hard to turn your back on technology.

Don't be surpised if you see even the most staunch vinyl DJs using one, even if its hidden under their records.

I feel like: yes, it could happen, but it will take a long time.

Example: People accepted plastic versions of everything that has been manufactured, but it took a long time for them to accept the performance of
something plastic as comparable to something made of metal.

Here, it's not about sound quality, it's about the performance of the DJ,
and esthetic as percieved by the crowd.

So, for the forseeable future, at least in hip-hop, don't nobody wanna
see someone playing with some CDs. Even people who don't make music know that it takes skill to operate a set of analog turntables, and takes very little skill to use 'CD scratchers'. Like, biz markie did that at a show I went to, and people in the crowd were pissed. They felt gyped. It's like killing a dear with a machine gun. Sure, that makes you more successful on the hunt, but will never make you a better hunter. So what you scratching with your belly? It's a CD turntable. I could use a shovel on it and the scratch would sound fresh.

I ain't shitting on nobody for using them, but lets be realistic:
anyone can use those. If it's about blending, beat juggling, matching,
and the vibe of the whole night, the gear makes no difference, it's about your brain and your ears, so more power to you.

But for tricks and scratching, you are a sucker if you tryina get over
with CDJing.

I woulda been 1st to say "F#ck that sh!t" , but . . . . . . . variables are a muhtha . As for using live , the only people I saw freak it live were De La w/ the Denon joints . . . . 'til about a week ago . Some kid brought one of those Numark sh!ts in that looked like a real turntable to a show I had to DJ for and he killed it . I asked him how it was & he said it was up to par w/ vinyl . As for in the studio . . . . . . I think CDJ's are hot because you could take pieces of one of your artists acapella's/verses/whatever and do hook cuts on a song and they make mixtape's a breeze when you want a song you can't find through diggin' but you hit up Limewire and find it in 15 sec's . I don't know . I'm a stubborn f#ck and I used to hate on the CD sh!t but as of late it has proven itself to be quite useful . Hiphop came from vinyl manipulation and the traditionalists will keep it that way . It's like how I have a computer but still use my reel to reel for what it's needed for . To each his own . Peace .

Ive played a Numark cdx, Pioneer and the new Technics. All sound like sh*t! (for skratching, its another story for house-beat-mixing)

im a a dj and i still use vinly and i love it but i can see inventiually that vinly will fade out to the cd turntables the cd turtables now are allright but of couse there will be up grades and eventially they will be right
i use one cdj1000mk2 with my turtable setup i tried to avoid it for the longest but couldnt becase the way music is going these days

1st you have bootlegers they get songs before a artist puts the album out and puts them on the street know you have a whole club of people wanting to hear a song thats not out on vinly yet and the only way you can get it is on cd

2nd now that music equipment is affordable there are a lot more home studios and people are making more independent music or local music and those artist arent putting ther music on vinly so u can only get on cd

3rd with all the technolgy they are putting in the in cd turtables built in sample pads,looping,and multiple cue points cd turntablelist are able to do mixes and blends that could never be done on a turntable a lot of djs are noticing that and are switching over

4th and probably the biggest reason i heard djs say they switced is becase they are tired of caring all those record crates and now u dont even have to carry cds or worry about them scracthin up you can save your songs to sd card as mp3 i saw a dj do a whole night with two 256mb cards

And !! You forgot your most important statement.....: "Buying records is too damn expensive, I rather copy and download my tracks, because its free and easy."
So if records will dissappear, the musicindustry will loose mo money. Cause everyone will be a dj with music theyve downloaded/ copied from fella dj kids and p2p.

Hmmm, I like this one!! Ive been dj'ing now since 91/92 and Ive checked the CDJ things. DONT LIKE EM. First like what trupro said it takes SKILL to DJ with Vinyl & whats the fun in watching some joker pressing start stop on a cd player, you might as well just sit a laptop on stage & be done with any human input (Yeah that would be entertaining...NOT) And believe it or not your gettin a much warmer, heavier sound from vinyl, its still raw analogue, its not been processed thru A to D converters etc etc.
And I dont care what anyone tells me, theres no way you can get as creative with CD's as Vinyl in the mix, think about all the little cuts, rewinds etc, oh & how long does it take to change a cd. I can just see all these new skool doods carefully opening there CD cases and changing them.....BORING!!!!!!!!!! until I see the DMC World champs being held with CDJ's and cats like Rectangle, Q-Bert getting crazy on yo a**** then I will not be convinced.
Sorry if appears im ranting but i feel pretty strongly bout this. CDJ have there place in all ya cheesy, commercial clubs. But the underground NO

records have a much wider range of frequency response than cds do...

as much as i hate saying it vinyl is gonna die out. the cd turntable is gonna kill it. you can be as pro-vinyl as you want to be but vinyl makes up only a small fraction of all music sales & has the lowest profit margin. the majors are basically still pressing vinyl as a courtesy to dj culture. i never ever ever thought they'd be able to get a cd player that works somewhat like a turntable but as much as you wanna dis it the technology is incredible. & its only gonna get better. if you're a club/party dj these days & you dont have at least one cd turntable you're cheating yourself.

that being said... the two times i used cd turntables the main thing i didnt like was the delay in response from the time i touch the platter to the time it responds. so wack. & i was on the pioneers. i didnt like how it felt like i was spinning 45's. i also think it'd be wack in a club environment when you know you need to drop the needle at a certain point in the song. i guess they have those "markers" but arent there only 5? not good for on the fly mixing.

& screw all those features like looping. thats wack

regardless, if i was still dj'ing clubs & partys i think i probably would have already switched over to cd's. it'd be horrible if the laser got off track & started skipping all the time though wouldnt it?
