I haven't updated since 1.4, quick question...

Been out of the game for a bit, ready to get back at it with all the seemingly nice additions to the Ren.

I am running an MB pro Mavericks X, will I have any issues going from 1.4 to 1.7? I read that the hardware update had problems etc.

I haven't so far. BUT: I only use Studio with my MB Pro, Ren's connected to an older iMac running Lion.

In terms of the process though, do I have to install the hardware update separately, and the mac driver, etc? Or can i just click on 1.7 and all will be good in MPC land?

I haven't firmware-updated my Ren either, so it's not necessary…

why do you guys not update it?!

Not to bet my mum on it, but I think it's only necessary if you want to use MIDI control mode...

I thought it allows you to work on beats with the software only, without needing the hardware attached, no?

The firmware update does not allow that, it is a function of the software, it doesn't matter what firmware is loaded in the controller when it is not connected to anything.
