Patch Phrase vs Time Stretch

What's good? I'm still using 1.6 because I'm afraid of encountering those issues people are having loading up older projects, as I've read about, but that's a different topic…

Do people think Patch Phrase is a helpful feature? Because whenever I try it, there is crazy clipping, start/stop artifact stuff going on. Even if I'm changing something as small as a 2 bar loop by 1 BPM. I've tried all sorts of combinations/experiments, watched those tutorials on youtube, and still every time I try it, the new Patch Phrase sound comes up sounding like crap. Clips galore.

Time Stretch, on the other hand, seems to be pretty nice on the Ren. I've owned a bunch of different hardware MPCs over the years, and the Ren seems to be the most advanced/clean as far as time stretching.

Am I missing something with this Patch Phrase thing? Most people seem to be hyping it. But for me it seems crappy.

i dont use patched phrases, but imagine that having more divisions, slices would be better in some circumstances.. try adding more slices before converting to a patched phrase to see if it helps ...

Well, since inMusic owns AIR now, this may be a possibility. Patches Phrase works exactly as it is supposed to. By design, it's not going to be precise. With pp you are chopping via threshold, and pitch stretching, a la Recycle.
A well calculated time stretch will always sound and be more precise because everything is stretched evenly and equally. (This is why it takes so long on older MPCs.

My advice for you guys would be to learn to use a time stretch calculator.

Thanks and I know Spanish, but the video is of PP on a 2500. Can anyone do a demo, or at least a detailed step-by-step walkthrough of doing a successful PP on the Ren? Do we have to adjust the chop points before we create a PP? Cuz the main youtube tutorial that's out there says the chop points don't matter.

I think the chopping points do matter. I've taken the same loop and made patch phrases with different chopping points which had different results . Didn't experiment enoough to come up with a pattern though.

its easy to pp a drum loop.

but it sounds like shit when you do an un edit sample...say with drums/guitar/bass.

once you slow it down it sounds choppy as hell.

One trick is to add the patch phrase to a key group. Then you can try the patch phrase in a different key while staying in sync.
