I don't. ;)

You can still tap the tempo or calculate it. Don't be lazy, be clever! :-D

The MPC 2000 and 2000XL were the first MPCs to detect tempo. They work flawlessly in my opinion. Every MPC after that either has this function missing or has it but doesm't work properly.

*stay with me fam.....we about to get the greatest MPC ever when those features are baked rite in the edit screen or a REN/Transfusor2 duo like the REN/Hybrid duo.

thanks brotha, very helpful.

what about the swing math? this is the one that I'm in the dark about. when ever i use it I'm just winging it with pure ignorance. What does the swing 50 represent? and how do swing and shift timing work together? what are these numbers representing when it comes to the bpm and time sig of your track? are they using semitones to measure?

i cant use the cal cuz i suck at math

but most de we need that software to tell us the tempo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Neither was I. No insult meant, I am just trying to be practical. Hence the smilie.

Transfuser does it a little differently to the MPC2000.

Transfuser analyses the beat, detects peaks, and tries to calculate the tempo from the peaks, if there are no defined peaks, in the right places, it might not calculate it correctly.

MPC2000 has a field to manually enter how many beats are in the sample, and uses the number of beats that you enter, along with the length of the sample, to calculate the tempo.

EXACTLY why I don't trust these auto-BPMs. I am a MUCH BETTER conductor than any auto-detector (and I BET, so are you!), and I can count measurements rather better than a stupid computer, which calculates that stuff without apparent musicality.

Plus: If you want something done right, do it yourself.

Patch Phrase is great when you have a sample that it can detect correctly. If it doesn't, no big deal. I'm quick to get it loopin manually and time stretch if needed. Right now, the way I use patch phrase is just a short cut to loopin a 2,4 or 8 bar sample. Kind of a screening tool for me. If the sample is dope sounding as it loops, then I commence to chopping and rearranging or leave it.

I haven't been driven to using it any deeper than that. But I'd be interested to see what people are doing with it.

wot do you meanz?!

why would you patch phrase something to see if it loops right? cant you just chop it up and press the loop pad?

and do you sample complete chops witch drums, bass, trumpets etc etc

or just drum loops?

do you speed it up or slow it down? the problem is once you slow it down it starts sounding choppy as hell. i rather use time stretching. kind of sucks when you speed it up too much cuz all it does is mess with the tunning so it sounds chirp-e/ skuirelee

If there are drums in the sample, sometimes the drummer is way off beat because he was drunk in the studio, so the loop may not sound dope. The instruments may be in time, but the drummer is drunk and off.
Like I said, it's a screening tool.
If it don't sound right, then I time stretch and chop it. Or, move on.

Edit: I am commenting on a sample that has drums and instruments playing.
If I was to just sample a simple drum break, i would make it sound dope whether I need to chop, stretch or Phrase.

Bottom line, if Akai doesnt implement some form of realtime timestretching like Ableton, or even PT elastic Audio, they're falling waaaaaay behind the curve.
