mpc 1k freezing when linked with synth

I upgraded to jjos 3.16 and when I try to sync my roland fantom xa keyboard to it then my mpc starts freezing. I have it set up as a "handshake" and I also have an instrument cable going from the "Left(mono) output" of my keyboard into the "Left record in" of the mpc. The local switch is off on the KB and have all the settings on the mpc under midi and sync to "ALL" "AS TRACK" and the sync in is set to "1"..I've gotten it to work before, but now not sure if it's the upgrade or not. when I disconnect the mpc from the KB then it's better so I'm thinking it has something to do with them being connected...what setting would cause this to happen? need help please

also the mpc started stuttering the sounds really fast too. the keyboard did the same thing..it was going back and forth between to patches really fast in a glitch type manner

Try turning sync in to off.

You don't normally send sync out, and receive sync in, at the same time.

thanks for your reply, but what I'm trying to do exactly is play my Keyboard patches over my drums on the mpc. Doesn't the sync in correspond to midi in "1" and the sync out to the midi out "a" on the back of the mpc? I'm trying to align my KB midi channels with the mpc midi channels and setting the sync in to 1 was what was advised and it worked once before, but now it doesn't so I'm confused at the inconsistencies of my equipment..not sure what I'm doing wrong. Shouldn't I leave my KB setting as the master or slave? and then change they "type" on the mpc to "midi", set the program to "off" and then set midi to "1a", yes? If you could break down the steps in depth that would be fantastic..thanks!

also I remember having to go into my mixer and change the mode and input thru, but now there's an option for "source" to either set to "digital" or "analog" shall I use digital?

No, sync in is for incoming sync, either MIDI clock or MIDI timecode, that is used to synchronise the tempo or time of two sequencers, or with MIDI clock, could be used to sync an arpeggiator or LFO in a synth to a sequencer, for example.

If you are not syncing the time or tempo of the keyboard's inbuilt sequencer (or arpeggiator/LFO/etc.) to the MPC, then you don't need sync turned on in the MPC at all.

The MPC MIDI input will go through to the active MPC sequencer track just by plugging it in, without having sync enabled.

Each MPC sequencer track has a MIDI setting, and a MIDI port/channel setting, that is where you select which output port and MIDI channel the incoming MIDI note on/off messages go to, that is where you choose MIDI:1A for example, and that is different to the MIDI input/output sync settings.

The Input Thru setting is so that you can hear the audio inputs to the MPC when not in the sample record mode, they should probably be set to analogue, if you are sending an analogue signal into the MPC, and want to hear that input signal all the time.

Also look at setting up your Fantom in Performance mode, where you can assign a different patch to each of the 16 available MIDI channels.

Then you can assign a different MIDI channel to each MPC sequencer track, and build up compositions in the MPC sequencer using those different sounds that you have assigned to each MIDI channel.

Ok thank you Simon, do I even need to connect the instrument cable between the two or is just the midi cables alone sufficient? It seems the instrument cable is causing some signal issues..

You need to have a way to listen to the output of both the MPC and the Fantom at the same time.

That can be with a mixer, plugging both the MPC and Fantom audio outputs into it, or if you don't have a mixer, then you would have to plug the audio outputs of the Fantom into the MPC, and turn on input thru, to hear the Fantom through the MPC audio outputs.

One last question Simon, I only have 1 instrument cable for the time being and I plug the instrument cable into the "LEFT AUDIO OUT" of my keyboard into the "record in LEFT" on the mpc, yes? also when I hit mode>mixer>input on the mpc and in that screen where it says "mode" do I select "L" there as well for left?

Yes, that should do it, I think, as I have not used JJOS much at all, but it sounds right.

make sure the mpc isn't starting the fantom sequencer. With the mpc set to sync slave and sending clock you're probably getting a glut of midi data.

Set the fantom to local off, the sequencer to ignore midi start/stop commands.

I could be wrong, but I think sonewhere on thise settings is your solution.

It's freezing when sending and receiving same **** at the same time, meaning you probably got some undesided MIDI loop going on. Better check Roland's manual how does it handles incoming MIDI and what settings it has over it.
