In recent years I have had an ever growing supply of sampling vinyl stacking up in shelves in the closet, but I've also had less and less time and motivation to browse them for samples on my free time.
I have a monotonous job which doesn't require a lot of active mindedness and previously I've spent a lot of time with a walkman at work, going through old tapes for samples and interesting stuff.
So the last months I've had a used Mac Mini hooked up and ready to record, and when I do the dishes, watch TV or doing some light computer work I'm also digitizing vinyl. I then convert the files into mp3 and take them to work. While browsing them and something interesting pops up I log minute and second as well as the character of the sample in a small notebook. The plan is to go back to the uncompressed files and cut out the good shit and export it to my sample library.

Is anyone else doing this or something similar?

I personally think it's great so far; it's relatively quick to digitize large bulks of records and I the time I spend going through them is time I'm not spending any better anyway. It's a sweet relief to see the shelves start clearing up from work that's been hanging over me for years.
Of course there's downsides to it; I can't spend time checking out the covers at work and I might more easily slip out of attention and miss interesting stuff if I'm tired or some clown is causing a commotion all of a sudden.
Some records, like modern orchestra stuff or traditional folk music which I sample alot and often search for tiny details or variations within, I set aside to go through in a more attentive manner. Which also gives the option of turntable manipulation while sampling.

I guess some people have experince in something like this, I'd really like to hear how it worked out for you and if I'm missing something in my layout and/or if it could be further streamlined etc.

Hey man invest in a scanner to always have the and rip the full LP's to WAV too at least, not mp3! :WTF:

Your workflow sounds streamlined but make an hour every two days to work on those beats.

I am now having a clear out of stuff (I have STUPID amounts to sample) that Ive never listened to and wont use for DJing or there is nothing dope on them and reaping the rewards to be honest!

You got discogs right? Get those LP's on there man, its been a nice source of irregular (You never know when an LP you have someone instantly wants haha) income for me

Good luck and stay on it. Im in my studio loads so always throwing on random joints and I make the best beats this way

Please read the original post correctly before you start facepalming and WTF:ing about my choice of formats...

And what is that scanner you want me to invest in?

But on more general terms; after doing this for a couple of months I'm mostly satisfied with the results. I get a lot material covered and quite a lot of usable samples spotted.
The two time bottlenecks I see now is:
1. The scribbling of timestamps and sample character in my little notebook as soon as something good comes along.
2. The slicing and exporting of the samples in the uncompressed files. I'm doing that work in Logic and it's a few too many maneuvers involved in switching files, timeline orientation and exporting. Should be able to cut down the time spent editing the files slightly by rearranging some unergonomic solutions on the studio desk, but an alternative software would probably be even more economic timewise.

Im an emoticon kinda guy, dont take it personal

I would then getting record box software from pioneer (its free) I believe you can set markers on tracks too which would be great for you when it comes to being at home and not having to go through bits of paper.

Id also ask this question in the DAW forum too as they will have lots of input about what other software is out there for quick mobile editing, hey I think you will find something that will allow you to edit samples on the go and have them all nice and ready for when you are home.

I was just suggesting a scanner as the thing I love about my vinyl is all the dope artwork too :)

Hope that has been of some help

Just came to me - get reaper and reaper mobile demos their free and you can keep renewing them, you can use it on the go as well as a plug in for logic (I think?) reaper rocks for editing samples, its what I do. Click and S on the keyboard, love it, it also has autoslice which Ive not used yet...

lol, I was wondering that too.

Ryssen isn't chopping at work, just logging what good sounding samples are where (mp3's are perfect for this task as they are just being used to casually find samples, not master or even anything close to that) and if interested will get to them later in the studio. Doesn't sound like Ryseen is interested in mobile chopping or mobile studio type stuff.

I'm really not looking for any mobile editing. I don't own an smartphone and bringing an old noisey laptop to work is even more of a nuissance than scribbling in some notebook all the time.

Emoticon or not, it's the fact that you assume that I'm unaware of basic recording and format regimes or lack common sense, even though it's spelled out in the initial post that the listening mp3:s is not the file to be edited. I find that borderline disrespectful.

Advice for the future: If you get the impression that someone is missing some very basic points and you feel the need to point it out. Either put it as a discrete suggestion in the form of a question, or if you feel the need to be more exclamatory, please go back and make sure that your assumptions are in fact correct before you start correcting people.

No sorry needed man, we understood it, it's just not what ryssen was trying to do. Now, me, yes, I take my ipad3 with me sometimes and I actually do some of what you were saying.

It's not a matter of DJ:ing or making things mobile, it's about browsing the massive backlog of unsampled records I have. Stuff that's been on the shelf for years because I have less and less free time to spend sample searching, while I on the other hand have plenty of opportunity to listening through stuff at work.

He was clearly just trying to offer some advice, he also clearly didn't find it all too important to correctly read the text he was throwing his advices at.

And if you publicly start slapping your forehead at other peoples mistakes, wrong doings or lack of experience when it's actually your own basic misunderstanding of what's written that is the problem, then I say it's time to gear down, reflect and change your approach.
