getting an ASR X an need some basics covered

okay i got further.... opening up the drive showed that the cables are loose.

my drive is now found but next stop "can't format disk" :/

What is the size of disk you're trying to formate? I've heard people having problems when disk is bigger than 1gb.

its 1gb supplied by the seller

also tried changing jumper from 4 to 0 but same result.

there are 2 jumpers that are placed next to each other



should i turn directories off or something?

+ i get the same result with 2 different 1GB cards. it starts with formating "please wait" but than "can't format disk"

Okay. Size shouldn't be problem then, and as your asr-x recognzes the cardreader, I don't think SCSI ID is issue here.
You could try formatting disk with you computer. Or even take a step further and create following folders on disk: BANKS, SEQUENCE, SESSION, SOUNDS and WAVES. So total of 5 folders, all capital letters on folder names. Those 5 folders are created whenever you save something on disk, so maybe asr would think that disk is formatted, even thought it is not.

It's been a while since I formatted my disks for asr-x, and I don't remember all the steps I took too well.

Hmm... I just had strange memory with formatting issue. If I remember correcty (I'm not too sure I do) I used old Canon digitalcamera to format compactflash cards before I could get them working with Asr-x. So if you have access to old digitalcamera that you could format the cards with, do that. You don't need to save anything on cards before you put them on Asr-x after you've formatted them with camera.

got it working. jumper had to be on zero wich is actually somewhere in the middle.

It would be good, if you'd send this information to the guy who sold card reader for you, so that next guy who buys card reader for Asr-x shouldn't go thru all this trial and error. Just ask the guy to preset SCSI ID 0 for next Asr-x customer, as my card reader is SCSI ID 0 and yours too and they're working.

I think I would be more inclined to mention this part to him

worked this out with him, so he should know.
also told him about the cables wich did upset me... but all great now!

Another thing i need to get my head around.

i have a turntable wich is line or phono
the ASR X
a Yamaha THR 10 as speaker and recording device

if i plug in my TT "line out" into the Yamaha THR10 i get perfect sound (phono is too silent)

if i however leave my TT attached to the ASR (wich i prefer because i hate changing cables) and run it through the "INPUT DRY" and than from the phones out of the ASR into the Yamaha Input i get thinner sound... here i have to choose "PHONO" because line out from the TT distrorts the sound through the ASR awfully ugly even with input dial all the way down (asr)

also i think my asr output is thinned out somewhat, dont know why. the TT directly into the Yamaha sounds a lot better!


i just thought hey maybe its the phones out that i am using that is the bad idea, but changing from phones to L and to R one after another doesnt change the sound at all.



any ideas?



another thing... my line/mic jack on ASR is jammed. it stays down on line (got it this way)
but could it be it actually is in MIC mode and therefore distorts the LINE signal because its too hot?

the more i think about the more i am sure it exactly the issue i am having.

no wonder my sound is thin...thought its the THR10 but isnt.

so the mic/line switch doesnt seem repaiable for me.

my best bet would be a little phono preamp to use the phono out of my TT and than get the same full and round sound that i get from line out to the THR10

right?

Yes, the phono output of a turntable will sound a lot thinner than a line out, because it needs a phono preamp to apply the RIAA de-emphasis EQ curve to make it sound the way it should.

Using a phono preamp might not help, as it will output a line level signal, which will be just the same as the line level output on your turntable.

A signal being recorded onto a record has the pre-emphasis EQ curve applied (green), and a phono preamp used when playing back a record has the de-emphasis EQ curve applied (red)...

oh damn, and turning volume down on phono preamp wouldnt help?

i am a bit lost here. What to do? the mic/line switch is soldered on the mainboard of the asr x.
i dont want to mess with that and wouldnt know how to find the part either.

to describe the defect: the mic/line (up/down) switch is loose/can be moved in circles and probably broken off the actual switching element inside the knob.
should i somehow try to get the finger switch out and try to reach the inner switching element with a nail or something?
